5 Things I Love About Living in Lexington

2

Ever since I was a teenager, I loved Lexington (or L-Town as the locals like to call it). I grew up in Columbia and West Columbia, but feel Lexington has always had my heart.

I always knew I would live there one day.

Almost four years ago my husband and I chose to make Lexington our home. As soon as I was approved for my first home loan there was no doubt I wanted to live in Lexington. Here’s why…

1. The School District

Lexington County School District 1 is phenomenal. It boasts some of the top schools in the state, excelling both academically and in athletics. Three students from Lexington District 1 were 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program Finalist. Out of the five Lexington District 1 high schools eighty-five students were Palmetto Fellows Scholarship Recipients. In 2016 River Bluff High School won the 4A boys soccer state championship and the Lexington High School girls won the 4A girls soccer state championship. In 2015 Lexington High School won the state competitive cheer championship. The list goes on … but you get the picture.

2. The Rural/City Feel

I’m a city girl at heart, but I also like the quiet of the country. Just earlier today while driving home I was stuck behind a John Deere tractor driving down Mineral Springs Road. It didn’t even bother me. I enjoy the reminders of a simpler way of life. Along this same note, I love I can be in downtown Lexington and in less than ten minutes and along the way I’ll pass corn and cotton fields. Lexington County is the largest producer of collard greens in South Carolina – the state vegetable (fun rural fact)!

3. The Food

While my husband and I love going out to Harbison Boulevard and the surrounding areas on occasion to eat, Lexington has grown so much in the past few years that we really don’t need to travel far anymore to go to a decent restaurant.

One of our favorite places to eat in Lexington is the Old Mill Brew Pub. Have you tried one of their burgers? My favorite is the Old Mill Burger. It has a fried green tomato on it. Yum! If that isn’t Southern, I don’t know what is! Libby’s is another one of our local favorites. Our upholstery shop just made an enclosure for their patio area so you can still sit outside if it’s raining or cold – such a great environment with delicious food to boast!

4. The Shopping

Ten years ago there were hardly any stores in Lexington. Then overnight we got a Kohl’s and Target! Some of my favorite stores are 14 Carrot Whole Foods, Hobby Lobby and Ulta!

5. The Lake

Lexington borders Lake Murray, one of the most popular destinations in the Midlands. I have spent all of my summers on this lake – both as a child and an adult – either on the beach or on a boat (if you don’t have your own, you can rent one for a family lake day or hit up a friend). Just one of the many amenities of living in good ol’ L-Town!

Are you a Lexington resident? What would you add to the list?

  1. Lexington just keeps getting better all the time. Thanks for writing this article, Lauren – it’s nice to see Lexington getting the credit it deserves! Would also like to add the newly-opened Ice House Amphitheater as a must-see. The Farmer’s Shed off Augusta Highway has farm-fresh food and was featured on Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” The Lake Murray Dam Walkway is another gem – great way to exercise while soaking in the view.

We’re looking forward to watching Lexington continue to grow and flourish! We’ve loved working here in Lexington for all of these years. There’s so much to do and see, and the sense of community is incredible. Thanks again for writing this, Lauren!
