5 SUMMER must reads

I love escaping into a new book. It’s a great break for the stress of the day and demands of motherhood. It is part of my nightly routine to curl up with a great novel and just UNWIND.

Last night I finished my 63rd book of the year — yes you read that right — and I wanted to share my top five picks that are prefect to add to your must-read list. Here they are….

Pictures of Lily

by Paige Toon

lily

I have come down with a total obsession with UK and Australian authors. Their chick-lit just seems to be a little sweeter than ours and I’ll admit it makes me swoon a little! This book focuses on Lily and an unrequited love. When she was 16 she fell in love but it just couldn’t happen at the time (no spoilers here!). Years later, she’s engaged and she runs back into her love first love from all those years ago. So the question lingers, “What now?” I spent SO much time anticipating the return of her unrequited love. SO. MUCH. TIME. It’s a really sweet and endearing book — perfect read for some warm feelings!

Maybe In Another Life

by Taylor Jenkins Reid

maybeAll I can say about this book is YAAAAAS (which is an emphatic YESSSS!!!). Taylor Jenkins Reid, the author, was totally on her “A” game with this book. The main character is at a crossroad and has a major decision to make that will change her life either way. She can leave a club with her ex who she views as the one that got away, or not to. The story follows her making both choices and is written simultaneously showing what would have happened with each choice. In each scenario, she believes she’s found the one. It addresses the whole soulmate theme. Do they really exist? This is an absolute MUST read.

The Other Child

by Lucy Atkins

theother

If you need a good psychological thriller/mystery, this is the book for you. Tess is a photographer who is currently expecting her second child. She has just been through a whirlwind romance where she quickly got pregnant, married, and moved from the UK to the US. Shortly thereafter, it becomes clear that Greg, her new husband, is lying. He’s not who he says he is and she has no idea who the man is she let into her life (and her small child and unborn baby). Things keep happening that make it clear something isn’t right and she might not be safe, so Tess flat out needs to do some digging. She makes a discovery and then things unravel from this point. There’s so much suspense in this book and it completely keeps you guessing. I can usually figure out what will happen in the end before I finish reading, but this time it caught me by surprise.

The Status of All Things

by Liz Felton & Lisa Steinke

thestatusThis one is a doozy. It asks the question, “What would you do if you could rewrite your fate?” Kate is about to marry the love of her life, Max, when he calls off the wedding at the rehearsal dinner. Reeling and crushed from the break-up, Kate makes a post on Facebook. Suddenly, just like a wish to a Fairy Godmother, what she posts comes true! Kate realizes she’s been given a once in a lifetime chance to rewrite her fate. She can still marry Max! But should she? And what about all those statuses on Facebook? Do we really only post what we want people to see? All smiles, no reality? This book explores it all, but is light enough for a day at the beach.

Things You Won’t Say

by Sarah Pekkanen

thingsAs a cop’s wife, Jamie Anderson gets a notice that no spouse of an officer ever wants to receive. Her husband’s partner has been gravely injured and her husband is devastated. Then tragedy strikes again. Another shooting — but this time her husband pulled the trigger and Jamie doesn’t know what to think. As a hail storm transcends upon her family from the media to the community, Jamie tries her best to hold her family together while also doubting her husband’s actions. This one is a little heavier, but it’s still a good page-turner.

I hope you jump in and enjoy one of these good reads.  What would you add to the list ?

Simone Praylow
Simone Praylow is wife and bestest friend in the world to Otis (better known as Odor) and mom to football and soccer loving Grayson 12, competitive cheerleader Elind, 7 and tantrum expert Ozzy Voltaire, 2. She is a native of New Jersey but relocated to Key West and later Columbia. As an overachiever, she believes learning is the best gift she can give her children and spends much of her time teaching her children at home (Grayson attends school, but the learning doesn't end when he leaves the classroom). Simone finds motherhood and family life are most easily managed by having a system in place for homelife, kids' schedules (including learning, screen time and reading) and meal planning. She is an avid reader who finds books are one of the best ways to unwind at the end of the day. She spends a lot of time boxing and at Pure Barre getting her burn on. You'll often find her buried in a book or on Pinterest getting ideas for her next project or yummy meals for the family menu.
