5 Rainy & Cold Weather Day Activities to Combat Boredom

Lately, here in Columbia, our weather has been a roller coaster ride of ups and downs. Warm 70-degree days one day to cold and rainy days the next. If your kids are anything like mine, they love being outside running around, and playing. However, on those days when the weather is uncooperative, that’s not possible and we find ourselves stuck indoors with children who are full of energy and soon get bored.

So what do you do to combat those boredom blues? Here are five fun rainy and cold weather day activities you can do with your kids to make those boring days turn into exciting days!

1. Go on a Treasure Hunt

Sit down together with your child(ren) and draw a treasure map. Next, hide some “treasure” somewhere in the house and then let your kids use their map to find it. If you have pirate dress-up clothes and props, throw those on and let your inner pirate come out! Remember, X marks the spot!

2. Have a Dance Party

There is nothing like throwing on some fun upbeat music and letting loose! We don’t have a ton of kids cd’s so I usually go on youtube and pull up a Kidz Bop playlist and my boys and I dance around the living room laughing and having a blast.

3. Build a Fort

This is one of my boys’ favorites. Grab some blankets, pull your couches and chairs together and go for it! You can create so many different kinds of forts by just putting your furniture in different spots, using pillows and a variety of blankets and/or sheets. Stick some toys and maybe coloring books in there and you have an instant hide-out and secret playroom for your kids.

4. Make Homemade Play Dough 

This is a great activity because it’s something kids can really get their hands into and be creative with. Homemade play dough is also very easy to make! If you don’t have a recipe, here is the one I use. Play dough can provide hours of fun as kids mold and sculpt the dough into any kind of shape and character they can imagine.

5. Put on a Puppet Show

Puppet shows are a fun way to evoke your child’s creativity. If you don’t have actual puppets, no worries! Stuffed animals are perfect for puppet shows. Grab a couple of chairs and throw a sheet over them to create a puppet stage, let your kids sit behind the stage and put on a show for you. Then, you put on a show for them. Kids love being entertained as much as they love entertaining their parents!
