Welcome to Bump Diaries – a new series on Columbia SC Moms Blog! One of our contributors is expecting, and here she will share her journey – the good AND the ugly – with all of you. It is sort of like an homage to the original mommy blog where we provide a peek into the life of a {pregnant} mom.

I cannot believe I am more than halfway through my pregnancy. With my first child I was so aware of each passing week. I carefully tracked every major development by way of multiple baby apps on my phone. My pregnancy diary, while never filled up to completion, was at least looked at on occasion.

Yeah, that was my first pregnancy.

Second pregnancy, oh, poor deprived second baby, let me take this time to formally apologize to you for not being quite as with it as I was when pregnant with Big Sister. Here are a few of my second pregnancy transgressions. I will start a fund for your therapy now.

An Open Letter to My Second Child {Sorry Kid}

Dear Sweet Baby Boy,

I am so sorry I am unaware of your current size in relation to a pear or a kumquat. My Baby Bump app sends me weekly reminders and I swear I look at them, but the fruit comparisons make me hungry and I usually find a box of cookies to eat and quickly become distracted. I am sure you are the cutest little eggplant in the patch.

I know you are an adorable little vegetable, but I cannot tell you which one.

Speaking of patches, I want to apologize for blaming my new crop of problem skin on you. I know you are not purposefully wreaking havoc on my complexion or causing small patches of eczema to appear behind my knees and elbows. It’s the hormones. It is always the hormones.

My son, I promise I do not love you any less than your Big Sister because I took baby bump progress pics with her and with you, well, the bump seemed to appear as soon as the urine hit the stick and I just cannot bring myself to document that. Please do not hate me for being so vain.

Not my belly because I haven't taken a single picture of it.

Darling son, you do not have a nursery yet. You might not get one. You will have a bassinet (thanks to a friend) and eventually a crib (thanks to another) and then one day you will sleep in the same bed your sister was conceived in. Mommy and Daddy will get you a new mattress, we promise.

I also would like to take this time to apologize to you, sweet pumpkin, because you do not have a name yet. I know it’s got to be pretty annoying to be called Dude, Boy, Son, Buddy, or whatever else your Dad and I have taken to calling you while whittling down the list of acceptable monikers. Your sister, whose name was cemented before she was even a twinkle in my eye, has taken to calling you Penguin. It is totally adorable and totally not going on your birth certificate. Sorry there is no family name to bless upon your half Jewish head. On one hand it is fantastic that no close family member has died recently. On the other, it makes the whole naming you after the deceased kind of hard.

Look at that tiny cutie pie! Maybe Penguin isn't such a bad name after all.

Dearest son, the first 25 or so weeks of this pregnancy have been, how do I say this, heinous, but the last month I think we have hit our stride. I am so looking forward to your arrival, just please do not come early. Your bedding is still occupied by another kid.

Love,

Your Slacker Mom

And here’s how I’m REALLY feeling this month…

  • Cravings: Claussin’s Pickles, potato chips, tequila (I have NOT indulged this craving, but holy moly, I cannot wait for a margarita)
  • Exhaustion: No real boost of energy, unfortunately. However, I did get a little nesting bug this month.
  • Waking up at night to pee: Sorry hubby.
  • Braxton Hicks: Whoa nelly, these suckers are no joke. I don’t remember feeling them with my first.
  • Karate chops to the uterus: This little dude is quite the kicker. I have been feeling him move around pretty consistently since 20 or so weeks, but now I can track his routine. He is a big fan of 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. Wouldn’t it be lovely if he slept for those five hours in between every night?

If you have more than one child, did you find there was a huge difference between how involved you were with the first pregnancy versus the ones that followed?

Ashleigh
Ashleigh always knew she wanted to be a mom, but a stay at home mom, not so much. At 26 she found herself trading in her lipstick and high heels for Burt’s Bee’s and nursing bras. The first of their core group of friends to have kids, Ashleigh and her husband Eric strive to maintain their fun loving lifestyle while simultaneously raising their toddler daughter. Luckily, Tiny Girl is an adorable extrovert who loves getting out and about as much as her parents. On weekends you can find the threesome strolling the aisles of Target, road tripping it to Charleston, or hosting friends in Irmo for epic board game battles.
