Homeschool Friday: Fort Jackson and Columbia

Fort Jackson is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year! In honor of Veterans Day, which falls on November 11th, students will explore Columbia’s military history and learn about the US Army’s largest Basic Combat Training Center. Originally opened to train US troops during World War I, Fort Jackson today is responsible for half of the US Army’s basic combat training and trains sixty percent of women entering the Army! Students will participate in fun activities and get to see images of Fort Jackson and its soldiers throughout the past 100 years! $5 for HC members; $6 for non-members; $8 members and non-members at the door.

Please note: while the subject of the program will be Fort Jackson, we will meet at the Robert Mills Carriage House.

Veterans Day Toy Helicopter

Join our hands-on workshop in honor of Veterans Day, and you and your child can build a toy helicopter with turning blades! Once the toy helicopter is built, your child can decorate it with paint & stickers to create a mini-military vehicle. Register here.

Legends of Ancient Greece

Join Pan, the Protector of the Forest, as he shares three of the most famous stories from Greek Mythology: Pandora’s Box, Orpheus in the Underworld, and Theseus versus the Minotaur. This epic production introduces dozens of mythological characters and stories. It features elaborate shadow puppets and some of our largest marionettes!

Magic Workshop with John Tudor

Renowned magician John Tudor is back by popular demand with more magic and fun in this interactive hands-on workshop for children ages 6 and up. Your child will LEARN MAGIC and ILLUSIONS, as well as POSITIVE LIFE LESSONS in an afternoon that is sure to be filled with wonder and excitement!

John will begin the afternoon with a private magic performance for workshop attendees. After the performance, he will teach students simple illusions requiring a process of creation and imagination. All special materials will be provided.

Tuition is only $25 per student. Adults are welcome to stay and watch, but are not required to.

Seating is limited, so that every child can have the opportunity for individual attention throughout the day.

Octonauts Live!

The Octonauts and the Deep Sea Volcano Adventure features brand new and fan favorite songs led by the entire Octonauts eight-member crew including Captain Barnacles, Lieutenant Kwazii and Medic Peso, as they invite audiences aboard an underwater quest through a world full of adventure, interactivity, and tons of sea life surprises! The Octonauts and the Deep Sea Volcano Adventure is a high-tech production featuring costume characters and animated projections to a massive screen on stage. The tour comes on the heels of new Octonauts episodes premiering throughout the year on Disney Channel and Disney Junior

Sensory Sunday

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and sensory processing differences are invited to join us for exclusive Sensory Friendly Days the first Sunday of each month from 9 – 10 a.m., first hour the museum opens! They’ll have the opportunity to explore the museum in a safe and accepting environment, and enjoy interactive, hands-on activities. 
 
This exclusive event will also provide:

  • A comfortable, protected and accepting environment.
  • An opportunity for parents to make connections with other families.
  • Special needs information for parents.
