Growing up Passover was one of my favorite holidays. My entire extended family, easily over 30 people at times, descended upon my great aunt Helen’s on night one of Passover and then my second cousin Ed and Reesa’s home on night two for the ceremonial Seder meal.
Any Jewish person, or a non Jew who really loves brisket, can attest that Seder can take hours to get through. But I never minded because Passover and the Seder meal truly involved us kids – from the reading of the Four Questions to the hiding and seeking of the Afikomen.
One of my favorite parts of the Seder meal was the story behind the Cup of Elijah. According to tradition, Elijah the prophet visits every Seder meal to take a drink of wine from a beautiful goblet that sits in the middle of the table. As a child, it was my job to help set the table and place Elijah’s cup as well as open a door to allow Elijah to come in and visit.
Now you and your kids can have your own Cup of Elijah for Passover Seder!
You will need:
- Tissue paper in various colors
- A paint brush
- An inexpensive wine glass or goblet (I used a plastic one, but if your children are older you might consider glass)
- White craft glue or Mod Podge
- Gems, sequins or stickers for decorating the cup
- Scissors
- Damp paper towels or wipes for cleaning sticky fingers
Instructions
Cut the tissue paper into 1-inch squares.
Clean and dry the glass to remove any stains. Then dip the paintbrush into the Mod Podge or glue and start painting it on to the glass. Once the glass is covered, begin sticking the 1-inch squares on the glass.
Paint over each square on the glass with Mod Podge or glue. Layer the squares so they overlap each other.
Keep adding tissue paper squares until the entire glass is covered, including the stem.
When the entire glass is covered give it a final coat with the Mod Podge or glue.
Once the Mod Podge or glue has completely dried, let kids decorate the cup as much as they like with gems, sequins or stickers.
And there you have it! You have successfully created your very own Elijah Cup for Passover!
