Columbia SC Moms Blog is honored to partner with the Columbia Fireflies to bring our readers the following post. All opinions are entirely our own.
I think we have hit the main places; we’ve been to the zoo, stopped by our share of parks, and I can tell you where every single Target store is in the midlands. I’ve eaten at local shops, shopped at local stores, and explored downtown. We’ve been to school events, movies, plays, and even the ballet.
But until this weekend, we had never been to a baseball game.
I have heard of The Fireflies MiLB Team of course, but honestly hadn’t thought much about it. I had only been to one other baseball game in my life and it had been about 20 years ago. It was a Twins game at the Metrodome in Minneapolis and I couldn’t see the players (they were too far away), couldn’t understand the announcer, and spent all my extra money on a giant ice cream sundae that took me most of the game to finish. Any mention of baseball after that brought to mind memories of boredom and a tummy ache.
All that changed after a local game at Spirit Communications Park!
This beautiful park is located just off of Bull Street and was WAY easier to get to than we had anticipated. Parking was also easy (and inexpensive) which meant a lot to this family of 5 who had a drive back up to Chapin at the end of the night. Super easy to get in and get out!
As we walked up the stadium, my kids could hear the announcer and the music and they positively squealed with delight! The park was clean and the staff was helpful and friendly as we tried to find our seats. To say that my kids were excited was a gross understatement. We got settled early, well before game time, and then headed out to explore a bit.
Let me just say right now, there is not a bad seat in the place. As I walked around, I was extremely surprised to have such a great view from every spot in the park! You could easily see what was going on no matter where we walked to. There are so many different seating options – at so many different price points – our family immediately started making plans to watch future games from different places!
Did you know they have bounce houses at the park? Genius! Pre-game, the kids headed down and ran off some excited energy. There is an extra fee for this but you can do as little or as much as you want to suit any budget. Also, they are located away from the entrance so your kids won’t know if you decide to skip them altogether! I absolutely love having the option for kids to get the wiggles out! That is where we were when the National Anthem started and the view back on the whole stadium was pretty awesome!
Pregame the stadium is filling up!
Special military band performed the night we were there. VERY cool! The team was even in special camo jerseys which they auctioned off later! My boys were so excited I thought they were going to lose it! Baseball AND camouflage? What a night.
Our youngest kids had a bit of trouble following the game, but never tired of watching the action. We were all caught up in the excitement and the spirit of night! We all thoroughly enjoyed visiting with each other, chatting about the how the game is played, and jamming to the ever changing music. Between the announcer, the players, and the vigilant watch for foul balls, there was NO room for boredom here! We cheered and laughed and enjoyed a deep fried oreo … or two. A storm moved in and chased us away (you can see the clouds in the pictures above) but the staff, then and the whole rest of the evening, were super helpful. We were sure to pick up t-shirts on the way home and the kids haven’t taken them off since!
As it turns out, there is actually some truth to the old saying that baseball is America’s favorite pastime. There is something special about seeing so many people come together for a local team. Old, young, super fans, and casual observers; all were represented. We saw grown-ups scramble for a foul ball like children diving for candy at a parade, and children jump to their feet and cheer after a double play. Everyone was happy, excited, and ready to show their spirit for the local team. It was a family night we won’t soon forget and we can’t wait to do it again!
