Guide To Farmers Markets Around Columbia

2

Farmers Markets Around Columbia | Columbia SC Moms BlogWhen my family and I moved to the Columbia area nearly three years ago, there were a few things I started to search for long before we had even found a place to live: the nearest library and a local farmers market. You know … because, priorities.

The Midlands did not disappoint! With year-round mild weather and a long growing season, farm fresh produce is readily available. In addition, the central location of our city brings artisans and business owners from the mountains, the coast, and everywhere in between. Whether you are new to the area or are a true Southern local, you are going to want to check out the list below and make some plans to explore.

Now, I realize that frequenting a farmers market is not a new concept. Most communities have them. In addition, the popularity of such events has grown with the current trend of certain diets, the farm to table movement, and the desire to keep business local. Again, none of these are shocking discoveries but for some reason, they have become the ‘in’ thing to do. As a result, there has been a bit of a boom in local markets and this can only be a very good thing for all of us. They are for anyone and everyone. It doesn’t matter a bit if you have NEVER been to a farmers market or if you spend every Saturday morning there. It is irrelevant if you eat paleo, vegan, gluten free, or are on a strict diet of pizza and cheap beer. Whether you bike to work, ride the bus, or commute an hour in your Volvo. Regardless of your lifestyle, personal style, or hairstyle, there is something for YOU!

Each market has its own feel and its own vibe so be sure to hop around a bit. Some markets are very foodie focused, others may have more artisans and shop booths than others and have live music! You just never know! Often I change up the markets I visit depending on what I am looking for that day and the kind of shopping I hope to do. So stretch your legs! Explore a bit! And get out to a FARMERS MARKET!

Soda City Farmers Market

This large market is definitely a local favorite in the area and a great place to start if you are new to Columbia! Come hungry, as the amount (and sheer variety) of food stalls is phenomenal and you can eat while you’re shopping. The vendors change slightly from week to week, but you are likely to find local honey, crepes, wine, a plethora of regional foods, BBQ, and of course fruits, veggies, baked goods, and local meats and cheeses from nearby farms and dairies. The food vendors include many Main Street restaurants as well, giving you ample opportunity to try something new! It is a GREAT place shop with lots of booths selling local crafts, art, clothing, home decor, and just about anything else you can think of! There is a lot to see so I recommend coming early and taking your time. Meet up with friends, bring your out of town guests, let your kids find a new food to try, or just stroll and browse the options.
