Making Migraines Less of a Headache

0

Since middle school, I have suffered with migraine headaches. Sometimes I just have pain behind one eye and a sensitivity to light. Other times I am hit so hard and fast I can’t even stand up, and I vomit nonstop. When I get hit by a migraine, it can be debilitating; and it makes caring for my children nearly impossible.

I’m not alone in battling migraines; more than 27 million women in the U.S. are affected by migraines, and women are three times more likely than men to get migraines in adulthood. But it is possible to manage migraines. Here are my top tips for surviving migraines as a mommy.

See Your Doctor

Get in and see your doctor as soon as possible. In most cases, there are prescription medications you can take to treat your migraines when they happen. If the migraines are very frequent, there are daily medications to prevent them altogether. There are even medications that are safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor about what is the best treatment option for you.

Phone a Friend

Have a friend or family member on speed dial who can come over and help with the kids for a few hours when a migraine hits hard. If your spouse is home, ask for a few hours off to recover.

Find What Works for You

Most migraine sufferers will find some relief from lying in a cool, dark room in the quiet. In addition to any medications your doctor prescribes, some sufferers find things as simple as a cold towel on the face, a caffeinated drink or aromatherapy can help their symptoms subside.

Avoid Your Triggers

Many chronic migraine sufferers can pinpoint a certain trigger that causes their migraines. Strong smells such as perfume or air fresheners are common culprits, as are some foods. Sometimes migraines can be linked to your menstrual cycle, medication or stressful situations.

You may feel selfish taking time for yourself but you must remember to take care of yourself or you won’t be able to take care of your family.
