Mom(ME) Indulgences

mom(me) indulgences | Columbia SC Moms BlogAs we all know, being a mom is a 24/7, 365 day job. It is work full of running from one place to the next, carpool lines, dance classes, doctor appointments, lots of snot and vomit, school fundraisers, grocery trips, sleepless nights, and lots of worrying. There are very few (if any) times that we can take-off our “mom hat.” It is tough work and the most stressful times in our line of work often go unnoticed. So, what can we do to provide rewards for ourselves here and there?

As May commences and Mother’s Day is upon us, I know we will be running around trying to figure how to recognize our own mothers and friends. But, what about you?! Since becoming a mom I have found little things here and there that I like to call “mom(me) indulgences.” However small or big, they allow me to recharge, reflect, and have a moment that is all about me. I challenge you to treat yourself to something this Mother’s Day (and possibly every other day after!)

    Coffee

There is nothing better than having that first sip of a good cup of coffee. I purposely do not drink coffee until I have dropped my son off at daycare or until I have arrived at work. I want to enjoy that cup for all it’s worth in quiet! Coffee is two-fold for me, it is absolutely a daily indulgence but also provides me that boost I need in the morning.

There are some wonderful coffee shops in Columbia you must check out! Drip is a great place if you’re in the 5 Points area or on Main Street. If you’re in the Irmo area, Loveland Coffee is too adorable pass by! Their tiny coffee drive-thru kiosk located in the Murraywood Shopping Center is anything but ordinary. The Vanilla Dolce Latte is out of this world!

While we’re on the subject of beverages, let’s chat about wine. There are so many good places in Columbia to stop and grab a glass of wine after a long day. Gervais & Vine on Gervais Street, Cellar on Greene, Travinia on Sunset Blvd (just to name a few). If sipping from a glass on your deck, porch, couch, or in a bubble bath is more your thing, be sure to add a bottle (or two) to your grocery list!

    Sweets

Wine in my right hand, chocolate in my left! Since having my son, I have been trying to watch my calories here and there, but desperate times call for desperate measures and there is nothing wrong with that! Keeping a chocolate jar at work or some chocolate in the freezer to take a piece out here and there is a beautiful thing! If you’re more of a baked goods person, then you must try the Pink Champagne Cake at Momma Rabbit’s Nibble and Sips in Lexington or the Peanut Butter Pie at Nonnah’s in Columbia. Both are seriously amazing!

    Bubble Baths

Bubble baths are not just for the kids! When we bought our house, a garden tub was on my must have list and I am so glad it was! Check out Earth Fare’s wonderful selection of scrubs and bath soaks. You can get as much or as little as you like so it is perfect to try different scents and ingredients!

    A Good Book

Whether it is an e-book or a paperback, a good book can take your mind off the stress of the day-to-day. The Richland and Lexington library systems are wonderful and provide you access to TONS of free e-books and audiobooks. They also have a great selection of free online magazines if those are more your thing.

    Arts and Crafts

I have found that creating not only provides a nice decoration for my house but also is a wonderful way to relax. One of my new recent favorite crafting activities is to paint on canvas while having a glass of wine. It is my own version of the sip and paint! It is cheap, easy to set out and clean up. Whether it is sewing, knitting, crocheting, painting, gardening, or whatever else allows you to get your creative juices flowing, it is a great way to unwind!

    Netflix

A great deal with convenient entertainment for everyone! We never signed up for cable and have solely relied on Netflix for our TV viewing pleasure. Although we do not watch much TV in our house, Netflix was wonderful during the early months of breastfeeding and during those middle of the night feedings. My only complaint is once you start a series, it is so hard to turn it off and thus the Netflix binge commences!

    Flowers

My weekly indulgence is buying a bouquet of flowers for myself during my weekly grocery trip. This bouquet is often nothing special and is usually $3.99 at Aldi, but they last usually up to two weeks and provide a quick pick me up. I love having them in my room or on the dining room table. It is such a small splurge that can add a huge difference in your mood at home.
