5 Fun Ways to Enjoy the Top Children's Book Checkouts of 2016 | Columbia SC Moms BlogRichland Library recently shared their list of the top 10 children’s book checkouts for 2016. This list tells the story of popular new books and old favorites still checked out from the library, and in great numbers. I bet you will recognize a few of these, and if not, keep reading to find out more about these children’s books and how you can enjoy them with your child.

Top Children’s Books

1. Buzz Boy and Fly Guy (Tedd Arnold)
2. Where the Wild Things Are (Maurice Sendak)
3. Hop on Pop (Dr. Seuss)
4. Dr. Seuss’s ABC (Dr. Seuss)
5. Peter the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses (James Dean)
6. Fly Guy vs. the Fly Sweater (Tedd Arnold)
7. Fly Guy and the Frankenfly (Tedd Arnold)
8. My Car (Bryon Barton)
9. I Love My New Toy! (Mo Willems)
10. Fly Guy Meets Fly Girl! (Tedd Arnold)

Details on the Top 10 {from a local children’s librarian!}

Fly Guy Series (#1, 6, 7, 10)

It is no surprise that there are several beginning readers that made the list. The Fly Guy series follows Buzz and his fly friend on various adventures and is great for a child who is beginning to read independently.

*Make it you and your child’s goal to read the entire series in 2017!

More from Mo Willems (#9)

Elephant and Piggie is a fun series for new readers who read the speech bubbles between pals Elephant and Piggie. These charming characters are witty, loving, and the perfect blend of a skill-building reader and an enjoyable, interesting story.

*These are super fun to read together. Try reading aloud as a mini theater game with your child. You will both enjoy playing the parts of these good friends. Bonding, reading practice, and lots of laughs. Check, check, and check!

Dr. Seuss (#3, 4) & Where the Wild Things Are (#2)

I’m sure you are just as excited as I am to see that a few treasured favorites are still popular all these years later. Dr. Seuss continues to be a rhyming rollick for new readers, and Max’s adventures with the Wild Things resonates with readers over 50 years after its original publication date.

*Bring your kiddos to see a larger than life sized mural of Maurice Sendak’s famous artwork at Richland Library Main. Read the story aloud as you sit beneath the trees inside the building and imagine yourself going along for Max’s great adventure.

Pete the Cat (#5)

If you have a school-aged child in your home, you are probably very familiar with Pete the Cat. Enjoy all the books in this series. My favorite is Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes. It’s all good!

*Check out the YouTube song here. Sing and dance along with your favorite cat while learning about colors and how to keep on keeping on.

My Car (#8)

Byron Barton’s My Car is an essential for the child who loves things that go. Trucks, Airplanes, and Trains are all covered by this children’s author with simple text and bright, colorful illustrations.

*I love this idea of playing with cars in shaving cream. Easier clean up than paint, and a fun way to watch those cars go!

Did any of your favorites make the list? What books did you and your child love in 2016?

Sarah Shuster
Sarah grew up in Lancaster, SC but has called Columbia home for nearly 10 years since her undergrad days at Presbyterian College. Columbia holds a special place in her heart, as it’s where she got her first “grown up” job, obtained her Masters of Library and Information Science degree from USC, and met her husband, Todd. She became a mother for the first time three years ago to Todd’s two sweet daughters, and loves watching them grow into unique and interesting young ladies (12 & 14) who inspire her daily. She is also experiencing life with an infant for the first time with their newest family member, a silly, happy 6-month-old baby boy. Sarah is a full time children’s librarian, and loves that her passion and her career have aligned to form dreamy days of sharing her love of literacy and learning with children and families. Sarah enjoys practicing her cake decorating skills, reading, brunch, ridiculously long showers (a luxury now with an infant), working out, good coffee and perfecting the art of crockpot cooking.
