Homeschool Friday: Historic Gardens

Historic Columbia’s Homeschool Friday program continues Friday, April 7 from 10-11:30 a.m.
Homeschool students will learn about 19th-century gardens and planting techniques in this hands-on program. A master gardener will show students proper techniques, including planting seeds, watering them and fertilizing plants. In addition, students will learn about heritage plants, including some recently brought to Historic Columbia. They will also learn how herbs in the 19th century were used as medicine, seasoning and in other ways such as mosquito repellent. Homeschool Friday is $5 for members, $6 for non-members and $8 for both members and non-members the day-of. This Homeschool Friday will be held at the Robert Mills Carriage House located at 1616 Blanding Street. Puppet Jam

Toddlertime

Toddlertime is an interactive program for toddlers and their caregivers that encourages early enjoyment and development of language and literature through stories, rhymes and songs. For more information, call 345-5479. (ages 18 – 35 months)

Home School Friday   

Add EdVenture’s signature programming to your curriculum! On the first Friday of each month, we offer informal, experiential, hands-on education specialized for homeschool students. Come enjoy our programs on-site here in one of Columbia’s biggest and brightest classrooms. Perfect for ages 3-12, this programming gives your student a chance to enjoy EdVenture in a whole new way! Enjoy EdVenture-led special activities on the first Friday of each month from 2:30–3:30pm. Homeschool groups receive a discounted rate; $8 per child with a free admission for one parent/guardian; $5 for each additional parent/guardian. Registration required.

Children’s Easter Celebration

This free events includes Easter egg hunts, dinner and snacks, games, face painting, photo booth, train rides, and inflatables.

Breakfast with the Bunny

Join the Bunny for a fun-filled breakfast to celebrate spring! The morning includes breakfast, crafts and activities, an egg hunt and a souvenir photo with the Bunny. Advanced ticket purchase required. Registration Deadline is April 5. Tickets must be purchased in advance: $15 for one child, $10 each additional child. Adult meal tickets are available for $5.

Easter at Shandon

For all kids, infants  through 5th grade

  • Egg hunts occur by age range
  • Additional family fun includes carnival games, face painting, & bounce houses
  • Snacks available for a nominal charge (cash only)
  • The Egg Hunt will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.

LEAP: Romp & Rhyme Babytime

Literacy, Enrichment and Play (LEAP) is an interactive program for babies and their caregivers that uses books, rhymes, games, fingerplays and songs to encourage literacy through learning. For more information, call 785-2630. (ages birth – 18 months)

Kids Club® Easter Tissue Paper Art

They make; you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy a fun project. Sign up online or just drop in. $2 per project, supplies included. Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event

HISTORY DAY

History Day at the South Carolina State Museum is back for another day of fun for the whole family! Join us for a special day exploring and commemorating World War I featuring talks, presentations, music and more.

Music and film:

  • Live performance by the Ft. Jackson Brass Band Quintet
  • SC ETV and the museum will present an early screening of the new series, “The Great War,” from PBS and American Experience.

Presentations and Book-Signings:

  • Presentation by Sonya R. Hodges Grantham on the history of the 371st, a unit of African-American soldiers formed at Camp Jackson.
  • Author Carlton Mullinex will be signing copies of her book, Make Us Proud: Memories of A.W. “Rock” Norman WW1 Veteran Coach Extraordinaire.
  • Dr. Fritz Hamer of the South Carolina Relic Room and Military Museum will give a talk and gallery tour of the museum’s new exhibition on building Camp Jackson at the start of World War I.
  • Jerred Metz, PhD. will give a presentation on his upcoming book about the Battle of Bellicourt Tunnel. Following his presentation, he will be on hand to sign his book, The Angel of Mons: A World War One Legend.
  • Joe Long of the South Carolina Relic Room and Military Museum will present on Aviation in World War I.
  • Ron Shelton, Curator Emeritus of the South Carolina State Museum, will give a short presentation on World War II’s Doolittle Raid.

Demonstrations and Displays:

  • A display of military miniatures featuring World War I era tanks.
  • World War I reenactors from Military Timeline Impressions.

The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors Storytime

From Drew Daywalt, author of the New York Times bestseller The Day the Crayons Quit, comes a laugh-out-loud picture book about the epic tale of the classic game Rock, Paper, Scissors. Activities to follow.

9th Annual Cookout for Kids

This BBQ fundraiser features award winning cooks, music by Jellyroll & Delicious Dish, a T-model Ford Show exhibited by the Palmetto A’s, balloon art by Lila Manuel, face painting by Emerald’s Artistry, and a bake sale by the Red Hat Honeys of Columbia.

BBQ pork and chicken plates are sold for $10 each as well as a hot dog plate for $5. In addition, fully cooked whole Boston butts are available for $30. Each Boston butt is wrapped and ready to be eaten or may be frozen for a later time. Event is free.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

Join Dorothy on her adventures through Oz. Meet the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion on their way to visit the Wizard. But Look out for the Wicked Witch, she sees everything from her tower in the West! The classic story comes to life; complete with silver slippers, flying monkeys, runaway hot air balloons, and even a trip to Quadling Country (a leg of the journey that is skipped in the movie).

Northside Easter Egg Hunt

Free egg hunt begins promptly at 1 p.m. and boasts thousands of eggs, broken up into four age brackets (0-2, 3-4, 5-7, 8+). Inflatables, train rides, face painting, and lots of concessions  will be open before and after the egg hunt – all for free. Pre-register for priority entrance and to be entered in a $100 gift card giveaway.

Teen Sculpey Jam Session with the Secret Species

Teens are invited to come meet Richland Library’s Artist-in-Residence Marius Valdes, and make their own Secret Species creatures out of Sculpey Clay. They won’t want to miss this fun workshop! Registration required.

Palm Sunday Picnic and Easter Egg Hunt

Join us after the 11:15 Worship Service for a Free Palm Sunday Picnic and Easter Egg Hunts for ages toddlers-4th grade. Bring a basket for the Easter egg hunt. It will be a great day of worship, fun, food and fellowship!

Passport to Art: Get Surreal!

Celebrate the work of Salvador Dalí by creating surreal scenes of your own. We’ll experiment with oil and water to make abstract creations that could be right out of Dalí’s fairy tales. Join us at 1:00 p.m. to see some of the scenes the artist created himself.
