Kids in Architecture Day

This year’s Kids in Architecture Day will allow students to experience the architect’s collaborative design process. This program is designed to:

  • Introduce students to the process of design
  • Explore the relationship between architectural design, engineering, and art
  • Create an awareness of the artistic and built environment
  • Enhance communication skills

These program goals will be achieved through the design and construction of a Rube Goldberg machine. In this activity, students will work together and learn that there is more than one creative solution to any problem. Through the successful design of their machines, students will discover that the beauty in any design can be found in how it accomplishes its goal. After the students complete their projects, they will view videos of each group’s machine.

The exercises will be facilitated by architects from around the Columbia area. All materials will be provided by the AIA Columbia, a pizza lunch will be included and the event is completely free. Space, however, is limited.

Time: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Location: Richland Two Institute of Innovation (R2i2) 763 Fashion Drive, Columbia 29229
