Discovery Day: Show Me the Sharks!

Sharks really are misunderstood. These creatures patrol the oceans of the world and have some incredible abilities. Float on by and figure out these fish first hand! Ages 2 – 5. $6 for one child (with one adult) per class. Plus admission for general public.

Time: 9:45 – 10: 30 a.m. & 11 – 11:45 a.m.

Storytime is a fun way to introduce preschoolers to literature. It includes books, storytelling, poetry and songs. For more information, call 785-3519. (ages 2 – 5 years)

Tween Extreme: Lego Club

Join the block party — use your imagination, curiosity and problem-solving skills to build different Lego creations. The Lego Club enhances learning with hands-on activities that promote reading and critical-thinking at all ages. Registration required. For more information, call 345-5479. (grades 4 – 6)

Books & Beyond – Kids for Kids at St. Judes

Start spreading the holiday cheer early this year by making beautiful cards for children at the St. Jude’s hospital. Call 785-3050 for more information.

Military Appreciation Humvee 

Join our hands-on workshop where you and your child can build a custom wooden humvee to honor all those that have served our country. Once the humvee is built, your child can decorate it with paint and stickers. All Kids Workshop attendees must be accompanied by a parent or adult at all times. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last. Children must be present at the store to participate in the workshop and receive the kit, apron, and pin.

LEAP: Romp & Rhyme Babytime

Literacy, Enrichment and Play (LEAP) is an interactive program for babies and their caregivers that uses books, rhymes, games, fingerplays and songs to encourage literacy through learning. For more information, call 785-2630. (ages birth – 18 months)

Time: 10 – 10:30 a.m.

Kids Club®

They make; you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy a fun project. Sign up online or just drop in. $2 per project, supplies included. Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event.

Pumpkin Smash

Riverbanks’ residents will enjoy a post-Halloween treat during the Zoo’s annual Pumpkin Smash. Watch as our mammals, reptiles, birds and fish enjoy and interact with pumpkins of all shapes and sizes—even some with extra treats. Riverbanks’ pumpkin smash is a form of animal enrichment used daily at the Zoo to encourage natural behaviors. All activities are free with paid admission or membership.

Repticon Columbia Reptile & Exotic Animal Show

Repticon Columbia is a reptile event featuring vendors offering reptile pets, supplies, feeders, cages, and merchandise as well as live animal seminars and frequent free raffles for coveted prizes. Exciting, educational, family-oriented fun for everyone! Adults – $10, Children (5-12) – $5, Under 5 – Free

Time: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Virtual Reality Explorers

Come to the library for a (virtual) fieldtrip around the world! From the top of Mt. Everest to the depths of the ocean floor, these sessions lead by IT-oLogy allow students to engage in virtual reality exploration with Google Expeditions and the Mattel View-Master VR Viewer. Google Expeditions provides access to hundreds of virtual fieldtrips, allowing children to explore natural wonders, outer space, historic events, cities, famous museums and much more. Space is limited and registration is required. Children must be accompanied by a caregiver in order to participate. This program is provided by IT-oLogy and made possible with grant funding from Richland County Government. Children 6-8, Programs for School Age Children

STEAM Saturday

Join us for a catalytic program where books and science collide. STEAM programs stimulate children’s interest in science, technology, engineering, art and math. For more information, call 798-7880, ext. 3. (grades K – 5)

Bruce’s Big Move Storytime

Our favorite curmudgeonly bear now shares his home with not only his four geese, but three rowdy mice, too! Fed up with their shenanigans, Bruce sets off to find a rodent-free household. As usual, nothing goes quite according to plan. Join us for this hilarious Storytime that is sure to keep kids giggling.

Time: 11 a.m.

Snow White

Join seven lovable Dwarfs as they retell this classic tale with a few new surprises. When the jealous Queen’s Magic Mirror proclaims Snow White the fairest one of all, she’ll need the help of the Dwarfs and a friendly bear who is more than he seems.  Field trip groups, ask about our puppet making activity. Participants can create either Snow White, a Dwarf, or a Knight!

StoryBook Ball

Enter a world of kings and queens, pirates, princesses and fabled creatures as EdVenture transforms into a magical kingdom of storybook dreams. Children and their grown-ups will enjoy this merry evening filled with storytelling and themed entertainment. Rub the genie’s lamp and travel to exotic lands filled with face painting, and special characters from your favorite fables and fairy tales. Step inside and explore Dr. Seuss, Alice in Wonderland, Arabian Nights, Peter Pan, The Royal Court and the Wizard of Oz! Watch as we bring storybooks to life in the Tale Teller’s Theatre, prance with princesses at the royal dance party, and explore our Superheroes lair. Take the next coach and don’t be late! Costumes encouraged. $25 Members / $35 Non Members. General Admission tickets include kid friendly hors d’oeuvres and all StoryBook Ball activities.

Sensory Sunday

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and sensory processing differences are invited to join us for exclusive Sensory Friendly Days the first Sunday of each month from 9 – 10 a.m., first hour the museum opens! They’ll have the opportunity to explore the museum in a safe and accepting environment, and enjoy interactive, hands-on activities. 
 
This exclusive event will also provide:

  • A comfortable, protected and accepting environment.
  • An opportunity for parents to make connections with other families.
  • Special needs information for parents.

First Citizens First Sunday

General admission at the SC State Museum is only $1 for guests on the first Sunday of every month! PLUS enjoy 4-D movies, planetarium shows and/or blockbuster exhibit admission, for only an extra $5 each!
