Discovery Day: Leaping Lemurs

Lemurs are simply loveable. Learn all about these primates and their home in Madagascar. Do they really have stink fights and live in mobs? Join us to find out the answers! Ages 2-5. COST: $6 for one child (with one adult) per class. Plus admission for general public.

Time: 9:45 – 10:30 a.m. & 11 – 11:45 a.m.

Toddlertime

Storytime is a fun way to introduce preschoolers to literature. It includes books, storytelling, poetry and songs. For more information, call 785-3519. (ages 2 – 5 years)

Books and Beyond – Mexican Yarn Painting

The crafts of Mexico are renowned for bright colors and bold designs, especially the nierika, or sacred yarn paintings, made by the Huichol people. Children will learn about the history of this art and make their own nierika to take home. Call 785-3050 for more information.

Family Fun in the Garden: Mermaid and Pirate Party!

Party “under the sea” in this unique experience with pirates and mermaids! We encourage our guests to wear costumes! Enjoy boat races down Waterfall Junction’s stream, go on a treasure hunt, discover life from a mermaid’s perspective and more. Be sure to visit with our special Mermaid and Pirate guests too! Activities are geared to children ages 3–10, but all ages are welcome. Enjoy water play from 6–7 p.m. Crafts and activities will take place from 7–8 p.m. COST: $5 per child / $15 per adult. Tickets required for both child and adult. Plus admission for general public.

Soda City Cirque’s Paper Moon Variety Show III

An evening of Circus variety acts including stilt walking, fire performance, aerial fabric, hula hoops, acrobatics, belly dance, balancing acts and more.

Enter into the attic of make-believe where inspiration turns the ordinary into phenomenal and the far off places imagined during childhood still flourish.
This is an extraordinary world where anything is possible!

Soda City Cirque brings you the allure of daring and breathtaking circus arts mixed with the magic of summer. We invite you to join us in this lovely outdoor space for a final summer farewell full of mysteries and memories. Bring the whole family and a picnic basket to enjoy this charming modern circus show which also helps benefit Dream Riders of Lexington- a small local Lexington Charity offering equine based therapy to people with special needs and disabilites.

Dream Riders works with over 30 special needs riders per week and yearly provides over 1,200 hours of riding. With five yearly 6 week sessions and outreach with a local children’s shelter, these ladies and volunteers are busy. Soda City Cirque’s goal with this show is to help them with the neverending costs of equine upkeep and sponsor as many children as we can.
($120 per sponsorship)

Kroger Chef Junior

Please join us at your local Kroger store to receive your very own Kroger Chef Junior slicer that you can use to make delicious veggie dip!

A Kroger Chef will guide your child as they learn to create a tasty food item on their own. Each workshop lasts for approximately 20 minutes and includes activities such as decorating a cupcake or creating your own fruit pizza.

As part of every experience, your child will receive these Kroger Chef Junior items!

  • Apron
  • Chef’s Hat
  • Recipe Card & Box
  • Cooking Utensil
  • Patch

Each child will take home a recipe card that includes step-by-step instructions so that together, you can continue the experience at home with a made-from-scratch recipe! It’s a great way to foster a life-long love of cooking!

Kroger Chef Junior workshops are recommended for children ages 4-10 years old, but all are welcome! Please note, registration via Eventbrite is required.

SAT Prep Workshop Session 1

Join us for the first in a 3-session course to prepare for the SAT exam! Learn study and exam strategies and prepare for Session 2’s practice SAT with USC Test Prep instructors. How to Catch a Monster Storytime

Is there a monster in your closet? Are you brave enough to catch him? Parents and children will love this fun, inventive picture book, which reminds us that things aren’t always as scary as they seem. Join us for Storytime, with activities to follow.

Midlands Farm Tour 2017

Midlands citizens are offered an exclusive behind the scenes look at the inner workings of up to ten sustainable farms in Richland and Lexington counties.

The participating farms are: Carolina Bay, Fire Barrel Farm, The Winery at Mercer House, Up On Cedar Knoll, Leesville Aquaponics, Terra Kotta Farm, Meador Acres Chestnuts, Arnold Farm, Doko Farm, and Six Berry Farm. This year promises a unique experience with the inclusion of niche products like indigo and chestnuts, as well as a range of interesting farming practices, such as:
– Aquaponics
– Organic
– Hyperlocal Wine Production
– Farms utilizing the “360 method” of composting
– Rainwater harvesting, and the use of alternative energy sources

In keeping with the mission of Sustainable Midlands to encourage responsible growth, ensure access to local food, and establish a healthy environment for all Midlands communities, the Midlands Farm Tour connects Midlands consumers with local producers practicing farm stewardship and sustainability. The goals of the tour are to strengthen relationships within our growing farming community and to bolster support for our local food nexus.

“Every year we seek to engage a diverse sampling of farms to give the community an engaging immersion into the local agricultural economy- and have some fun!” said executive director Autumn Perkins.
All-inclusive ticket prices are just $10 for early-bird, and $15 after 8/26, and guarantee access to all farms on the tour. Children under the age of ten, and WIC, SNAP, and EBT beneficiaries are admitted to the entire tour free of charge with proof of eligibility.

Passport to Art: Psychedelic Patterns

It’s tie-dye, can you dig? Celebrate That ’70s Show with artwork from this far-out decade. In the studio, create your own tie-dyed patterns and get inspired at 1:00 p.m. with a tour of the exhibition. This drop-in program for families features a new hands-on art project each month. Free.

Celebracíon de la Herencia Hispana

The South Carolina State Museum is proud to host Celebracíon de la Herencia Hispana to celebrate Hispanic heritage. This event provides an opportunity for the community to come together to celebrate and recognize the Hispanic culture in South Carolina. Enjoy this family friendly day featuring:

  • Delicious Latin, Central American and Mexican Food from Los Bellos Portales
  • Live music and performances from: The Palmetto Latin Five, Corazon Latino and Grupo Folklorico Mexico
