Friday, December 4

Snowville

Children can climb Mount EdVerest, explore an ice cave, and even tube down Sled Hill, a 25 ft. long slippery slope sure to give thrills to all. Along the way, children will learn about the science behind the snow in a fun and exciting environment. Your ticket to Snowville is free with museum admission. Children and Adults: $11.50; Seniors (62+): $10.50; Military (with ID): $10.50; Children under two: Free

Columbia Classical Ballet’s The Nutcracker

The Columbia Classical Ballet performs their rendition of the holiday classic, The Nutcracker.

Time: 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Main Street Ice

Grab your family and friends, and head down to Boyd Plaza for Main Street ICE — The City of Columbia’s outdoor ice skating rink! The fee to skate is $10 for adults, $8 for children (age 12 and under) and $8 for active duty military and seniors (55+). The fee includes skate rentals. Special opening day and weekday rates.

Lights Before Christmas

Experience Columbia’s longest running holiday tradition—the 28th annual Lights Before Christmas at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. The Zoo will light up each evening with more than one million twinkling lights and countless animated images representing some of Riverbanks’ most loveable residents. Guests can roast marshmallows at the jingle bell bonfire, visit with Santa and enjoy the festive sounds of the Music in Motion lights spectacular. Riverbanks is also the only place in town where it snows every night!

The Lights of Cayce

visitors can take a ride through the Cayce City Hall complex and enjoy the magic of thousands of twinkling lights, dazzling holiday displays, and music of the season.

Town of Lexington Snowball Festival 2015

The event includes a concert, magic shows, face painters, balloon animal makers, stilt walkers and more.

Jingle Arrgh the Way Opening Night Event

Join the Columbia SC Moms Blog at The Columbia Children’s Theatre and experience the highly entertaining and family-friendly productions both parents and kids in the Midlands have been raving about! Known as the premiere theatre for families and young audiences, they are proving this reputation accurate once again with their upcoming holiday favorite performance of Jingle Arrgh the Way, A Pirate Christmas Adventure. And the best part is, it’s a show both parents AND kids will enjoy!

But this time it’s more than your typical show … we’ve truly embraced the spirit of the performance by bringing you the perfect blend of holiday fun and pirate mystery in a preshow event that is sure to put a smile on every face!

Holiday Lights on the River

Experience the magic of the Midlands Largest Drive-Through Lights Show! Saluda Shoals Park will come alive in a blaze of more than a million sparkling lights. Holiday Lights on the River features over 400 themed, animated light displays on a two-mile loop of the park! Fun-filled family activities will be offered every night during Holiday Lights on the River at a nominal fee ($1-$10). Visitors can:

•    Ride the Red-Nose Express Hayride to the Wetland
•    Ride the Saluda Shoals Choo-Choo
•    Take a slide on the Winter Wonder Ride
•    Walk along the lighted trail to the Wetland and enjoy a laser light show and the Deck the Doors Holiday door display
•    Make a craft
•    Visit Santa’s Claus’et Gift Shop
•    Roast marshmallows

Time: 6 – 10 p.m.

Carols Along the Riverwalk

The sounds of Christmas can be heard throughout the Cayce Riverwalk Park where several area church choirs and local musicians will be located within the first half mile of the park. Visitors can wander from group to group, enjoying holiday musical selections. The Riverwalk will be lighted with luminaries and hot apple cider will be served free of charge. This year, parking will be made available at BC High School with Trolley rides provided to and from the entrance of the Riverwalk.

Saturday, December 5

Home Depot Workshop: Holiday Stacking Blocks

Bring your kids to Home Depot and build fun holiday stacking blocks. Then, decorate your project with fun stickers and different paint colors. Teach kids the basics of working with tools, while letting them take pride in building a functional object to keep. Free hand-on workshop, designed for children ages 5-12. Kids get to keep their craft and receive a certificate of achievement, a workshop apron and a commemorative pin while supplies last. Please do not arrive before 9 a.m.; workshop spots are available on a first come/first served basis. Please register online to help us plan supplies.

Jingle Arrgh the Way: Breakfast with Santa

Join Columbia Children’s Theatre and Richland County Recreation Commission for a family fun Saturday morning with activities, breakfast, picture taken with Santa, a performance of Jingle Arrgh the Way and more!

Breakfast begins at 9:00 in the Food Court just below our theatre. At 10:00, we’ll head upstairs to find seats for the 10:30 performance of the world premiere family musical Jingle Arrgh the Way!

Tickets for the breakfast & show package are only $12.00 for children and adults!

Not an early riser? Come see the show this afternoon at 2 p.m. or 7 p.m.

Santa’s Gingerbread Jamboree

Visit with the Snow Princess while you wait your turn to sit with Santa and tell him all of your Christmas wishes. While he’s making his list and checking it twice, we’ll snap a photo with you and the jolly old elf! Santa’s helpers will be on hand to help you decorate a gingerbread cookie or do some holiday crafting that will get your Christmas spirit singing! This special yuletide celebration is FREE with museum admission.

Williams-Sonoma Junior Chef Classes: Gingerbread House Decorating Event

Michael’s KIDS CLUB® Clothespin Characters

Saturnalia

You’re invited to Saturnalia, a special festival celebrating Roman culture through food, crafts, reenactments and more at the SC State Museum. Guests will learn how the Romans celebrated this ancient holiday and learn what makes the Roman influences on our culture so important today.

Saturnalia activities include:

  • Legio VI Ferrata Fidelas Constans, South Carolina’s Roman legion, will be on hand with Roman artillery and drill demonstrations, kids and “Big Boy” Cohort training on how to be a Roman soldier, gladiator school and games, displays on Roman life, engineering, military, gladiators, Roman food and much more.
  • Castra Rota Gourmet Foods of Brunson, S.C., will have authentic Roman breads, cheeses and other period foods available for purchase and will talk about Roman food throughout the day.
  • A special presentation of the ‘Lord of Misrule,’ who will rule over the day’s festivities.
  • A Saturnalia parade.
  • Period machines reconstructed by Legio VI members

Guests can also explore the museum’s blockbuster exhibit, Julius Caesar: Roman Military Might and Machines.

Saturnalia activities are included with general admission or with museum membership. There is an additional fee to see, Julius Caesar; Roman Military Might and Machines

Train Rides with Santa 2015 – SC Railroad Museum

All aboard the Rockton, Rion and Western Railroad to take an hour long scenic train ride with Santa! Seating is limited so order your tickets here before you go! Train Rides with Santa: First Class car $20 per person; Santa Train $12 per adult, $9 per child 3-12. Twilight Santa Express: $20 per person.

The Snow Queen

The Snow Queen is the story of Kai and Gerda, two best friends on a real adventure! When Kai comes in contact with a magic shard, he is whisked away to the castle of the Snow Queen. First Citizens First Sunday

General admission to the South Carolina State Museum is only $1 for guests on First Citizens First Sunday!*

Included in general admission, guests can explore four floors of South Carolina art, cultural history, natural history and science/technology, including the brand new observatory and the new Robert B. Arial Collection of Historical Astronomy located on the fourth floor.

For an additional price, guests can experience the museum’s new planetarium and 4D theater, as well as the NEW blockbuster exhibit, Julius Caesar: Roman Military Might and Machines, opening Sept. 26.

Jingle Arrgh the Way

The “How I Became a Pirate” crew is back! A mysterious message left in the crow’s nest of their ship brings Captain Braid Beard and his pirate mates back to North Beach to seek out young Jeremy Jacob to help solve a riddle and find the Christmas treasure. Favorite characters, a rollicking story, great songs, and a trip to the North Pole to find “you know who” – makes “Jingle ARRGH the Way!” a wonderful holiday show for the whole family. Based on a story by Melinda Long, author of “How I Became a Pirate.”
