20 Fun Parent-Kid Date IdeasSpeaking from the perspective of a parent with multiple kids at varying ages, and the perspective of a grown only child, one-on-one time is one the best things you can do with your child.

Thinking back to my childhood, I remember a lot of great times, but some of the ones that stick in my head the most are the memories I made with each of my parents individually. One of my favorite pictures of my dad and me is from a father-daughter dance we attended every year. As for my mom, my best memories are of the two of us making a special day out of back-to-school shopping every year.

With my own family, I find it even more important to spend individual time with each kiddo. My husband and I do our best to give special one-on-one time to each of our three, and here are some of our go to ideas.

Picnic Movie Night

Hit up your local Redbox and the snack aisle at the grocery store. Flatten out a big cardboard box, or plastic table cloth in front of the TV. Send whoever else is at home out, so it’s just the two of you.

Camping

As South Carolinians, we are lucky enough to have some awesome state parks. Put them to good use! Rent a campsite for a night (or weekend if you’re up for it), grab your gear and enjoy nature together. Spend the time setting up your camp site together. Can’t make it to the park, or not sure your little will last the whole night in the woods? Set up camp in your backyard! Or better yet, the living room! Eat hot dogs and beans, make microwave s’mores, and sleep in the real tent or blanket tent, whichever you have room for.

Take a Class Together

Does your little one enjoy yoga? Sign up for a class. Rock climbing? Find a gym with open hours and go. Try something they’ve never done before but are interested in, and tackle the adventure of trying something new together. Whatever it is, doing it with each other is something neither of you will ever forget.

Make it Together

Spend some time searching Pinterest, craft books, or cookbooks to find something to make together. Make your supply list and go to the store with each other to get your supplies. Make the meal, craft or what-have-you as a team.

Library Date

Our typical trips to the library are chaotic to say the least. That’s why once in a while I like to take just one with me at a time. We find a snuggly spot in the children’s section and I let my kiddo go to town on picking whatever books he wants to read. We spend a few hours enjoying the endless supply of books.

Attend a Special Event

There are events as specific as father-daughter dances or as broad as a laser light show at the State Museum. It’s usually better to chose something you haven’t attended together as a family (or have plans to do so in the future). What makes this event special isn’t what you are seeing/doing, it’s that the two of you ‘own’ that event. It’s something that just the two of you in the family have done together.

Additional Ideas to Add to the List:

  • Paint pottery
  • Mini golfing
  • Bowling
  • Go-karts
  • Laser tag
  • Go to a sporting event
  • Out to dinner
  • Go to the park
  • Ice cream date
  • Spa night (mani/pedi either out or at home)
  • Go on a hike
  • Go fishing
  • Kite flying
  • Beach/pool time

Katie Stevens
A transplant from the frigid winters of New Hampshire, Katie and her family moved to the ‘Famously Hot’ Columbia in Fall 2015. She is married to her high school sweetheart Richard, and together they have three little humans; Maddox (5), Thatcher (3) and Chloe (10m), and a dog, Cabela. Katie spends her week days at her 9-5 in at USC School of Medicine, rushing her oldest to soccer practice, and letting the kids have cereal for dinner, cause ‘ain’t nobody got time for that’. The weekends (which she lives for), are spent at the state park, the zoo, or a magnitude of other fun places. As a fan of calligraphy, hand lettering, and DIY projects that all require hours of free time and buckets of money, you can find Katie scrolling Pinterest during late night feeding sessions, filling her boards with beautiful projects she’ll never have the time to do. Katie also enjoys spending her ‘spare’ time running her blog From North to South.
