5 Things I Love About Living in Northeast Columbia

5 Things I Love About Living in Northeast Columbia | Columbia SC Moms BlogWhen my family moved to Columbia two years ago, we had no idea what it was going to be like living in the Northeast. My husband and I just knew it’s where we needed to be because it was the best location for his new job. Little did we know how much we would love the area!

Now that we’ve been in Columbia for a couple of years, we’ve explored the different areas and came to the conclusion the Northeast is where we want to lay down roots. Here are 5 reasons why…

1. Shopping

There are so many shopping areas in the Northeast! The Village at Sandhill has a vast array of shops, restaurants, and entertainment. You can easily park your car and walk from shop to shop, then stop for a bite to eat before you head to a movie or take you kids to My Gym to play.

Just a hop, skip, and a jump from Village at Sandhill is Two Notch Rd. You can find pretty much anything you want on this stretch of road – Walmart, Target, Hobby Lobby, PetSmart, Publix, Best Buy, Once Upon a Child, Kohls, Dollar Tree (because who doesn’t love a good Dollar store buy?!), and so many more all in one spot.

2. Variety of Grocery Stores

You can find just about any grocery store you want in the Northeast. Like Publix? We’ve got those. Multiple, in fact. Bi-Lo? Yep. That one too. There is also Food Lion, Aldi, Sam’s Club, Walmart and the brand new Kroger Marketplace on Clemson Rd. And, let me tell you, if you haven’t checked out this new Kroger, you should. It’s beautiful!

3. Convenience

It is not only very easy to get around in the Northeast, it’s also very easy to get to other parts of Columbia. The Northeast is a short 20 minute drive to downtown. There is very easy access to I-77, 277 and 20W from many parts of the Northeast. I also enjoy the convenience of so many doctor/dentist offices, emergency care clinics, grocery stores, convenience stores (Walgreens, CVS, etc.), restaurants, and libraries all within a short 5-10 minute drive! There is so much available in the Northeast!

We are school district Richland 2 and we LOVE it. Many Richland 2 schools are rated top notch and have high standards. There are quite a few schools with excellent magnet programs and programs for special needs students.

I also like Richland 2 because of the school locations. Quite a few of them are located close together, which is very convenient for families with children in elementary and middle school and/or high school. You can easily hop from one school to the next if driving your children to school.

Another thing I like about this district is they have a FREE child development preschool program aimed at helping families with a lower income (up until last year you had to pay for the program, but now it is free so that more families may attend).

5. Parks

There are quite a few parks throughout the Northeast. I love having so many around because I can take my boys to different playgrounds instead of the same one over and over. The largest park is Sesquicentennial State Park, but there are also many smaller parks with playground areas. My favorites are North Springs Park, Polo Road Park, and Doko Meadows Park.

To those of you who also live in the Northeast, what are your favorite things about living here?
