Heads up, mamas! Easter Sunday is coming up soon! Not that you could miss it, since a plethora of themed products already crowd the shelves of every retail establishment across town! These days Easter, once a sacred holiday, has been taken over by bunnies and candy and all things pastel. I like to get back to the true meaning of Easter.
I really love giving my children gifts, and I love surprising them. But as I think about what I want them to remember and experience as their spiritual journey unfolds, I realize there is more that I can give them than just a repeat of stocking stuffers placed in a wicker basket.
Here are some ideas for a fresh Easter celebration that focuses more on the Cross than consumerism.
Resurrection Eggs
This set of eggs tells the biblical story of Easter with objects to represent each part of the tale of redemption. I love how my young children could tell the story independently using the props after just a little practice. One year, my neighbor hosted a street-wide Easter egg hunt that included telling the story using these eggs and it was a wonderful family event.
DIY Easter Art
My children really love to connect to whatever topic we are discussing using art. Making framed Easter art is a fantastic way to experience the Bible in a different way. Try searching for Bible Verse Printables or DIY Easter Art on Pinterest.
Empty Tomb Cookies
This is a sweet representation of the tomb in a simple recipe that delights children. The step-by-step instructions help tell the story behind the real meaning of Easter and because kids can help make them, it’s a fun way to involve them in commemorating the holiday.
God Gave Us Easter
by Lisa Tawn Bergren and Laura J. Bryant
As Little Cub celebrates Easter with Papa, Mama, and her brother and sister, she begins to ask her papa questions about this very special day of the year. Papa lovingly explains God’s plans for his children, while taking Little Cub on a memorable walk through her stunning Arctic world, and he shares how Easter came about in clear, simple terms that even the littlest cubs can understand. Check it out from the library along with the books: God Gave Us You and God Gave Us Christmas.
A Resurrection Garden
This is a perfect project for us this year since we are studying Botany. In the past, we have made our garden using wheatgrass, rocks, and flowers. There are many ideas for this online, from very simple to very involved. With great care and the use of moss or succulents, this garden could be maintained for a long time!
Forget the Frock
Forget the Frock provides a unique twist on Easter and encourages people to forgo buying new, dressy Easter clothes and instead purchase a t-shirt that actually serves a purpose – feeding a hungry child. The money from proceeds goes toward reputable causes like Feeding the Orphans..
A Sunrise Service
Traditionally, these are held outdoors across the Midlands in parking lots or public parks. This is a great way to experience Easter in a way your children will remember for years to come! Check The State Newspaper or local news stations for information on where services will take place.
