Becoming a Mom … 80s Style

Becoming a Mom ... 80s Style | Columbia SC Moms BlogA New Year always brings reflection of the previous year and anticipation for the year to come.

This past year brought the loss of so many icons from the 1980s like Prince, George Michael, and David Bowie. Maybe like me, you’re a child of the 80s. You wore leg warmers, sprayed endless amounts of Aqua Net on your bangs, tight rolled your jeans and carried your Lisa Frank binder around school.

Fast forward to this year and maybe you are planning to start a family or add another child. If that’s the case, then this one is for you.

Here is what it’s like to become a mom … 80s style.

Ahhh, those 80s bangs!

After realizing “You Got The Right Stuff,” your man decides to pop the question. You have a “White Wedding” and are living like “Jack and Diane.” Everyday you are “Walking on Sunshine” as newlyweds.

One day, you decide to change “Our House” and start a family. You give each other the “Look of Love” and enter the “Love Shack.” It starts with a “Kiss” and “One Thing Leads to Another.” After playing “Head Games” of ‘Am I pregnant’ every month, you realize you’re going to have a baby! You tell everyone your news, followed by “I can’t wait!”

After the plague of morning sickness, you become “Hungry Like a Wolf.” You waddle around thinking, “I Want Candy.” You eagerly go to your birthing classes and realize “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do).” Oh, “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” you will go for that because you see, you have no choice now. You begin to wonder “How Will I Know” when I start labor? Well, it’ll feel like everything below your waist is “On Fire.” That’s how you’ll know.

You soon discover “It’s the End of the World as We Know It.” No more “Night Life.” No more “Little Red Corvette.” Now, you’ll be “Working for the Weekend.”

Then, it happens. You “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,” but this ‘go-go’ isn’t for the bathroom. Nope, that would be your water that just broke. You wonder “Should I Stay or Should I Go?”  You decide to go to the hospital since you have no “Control” of your body and there are some “Nasty” things occurring. Your husband is “Under Pressure” to race you in a “Fast Car” to the hospital.

You’re “Hangin’ Tough” when the nurse tells you to “Walk This Way” or better yet, puts you in a wheelchair. The contractions are intense. You try to remain calm and quietly utter that the contractions “Take My Breath Away.”

It’s a “Thriller.” You feel like you’re on the “Crazy Train” and “Dr. Feelgood” (aka your hubs) looks pitiful as he watches you endure the contractions “Time After Time.” So, you shoot him the “Eye of the Tiger” and all he can offer are “Betty Davis Eyes.” You assure him that “I Will Keep on Loving You.” He urges you to “Never Surrender” and “Don’t Stop Believin'” because this baby will come out.

The doctor tells you “With Every Breath You Take,” he wants you to “Push It.” You follow his directions and are “Livin’ on a Prayer” that this doesn’t take “All Night Long.” The pressure … it’s “Too Much Pressure.” You’re not feeling like that cute “Lovergirl” you once were, but it doesn’t matter as long as the baby comes out … soon.

You finally realize you are nearing “The Final Countdown.” With the hope of the end nearing, you realize you ARE a “PYT (Pretty Young Thing)” and you WILL “Live to Tell” about this.

At last, your baby arrives and you say “Hello” to your “Angel” for the first time. This … this is “Sweet Love” and you “Cherish” this moment in time. You realize you have had a “Total Eclipse of the Heart” with this precious life and “These Are the Things That Dreams Are Made Of.”

Over the next few months, you look at “The (wo)Man in the Mirror” and don’t recognize yourself. You attempt to get “Into The Groove” with your new addition and “Get Back To Life.” The sleep deprivation can be “Straight Up” overwhelming. You wish you could say “Abracadabra” and make the baby sleep. Many nights you and the baby will be “Dancing In The Dark,” but have “Faith” because your baby will sleep one day.

Finally, you whisper “Sweet Dreams” to your baby and creep quietly out of the room. You look at your husband and whisper “I Think We’re Alone Now.” For the first time all day, you have a moment to “Relax.” In the midst of the chaos you remind each other that “It Takes Two” and “Real Love” to make this work. Parenting involves a whole lot of “Patience.” Then, you realize it won’t be long before you announce “Here I Go Again.”
