I Didn’t Inherit the “Mom Gene”

I Didn't Inherit the "Mom Gene" | Columbia SC Moms Blog

Y’all. Real talk. I don’t have the mom gene. Don’t get me wrong, I love my children and would do anything for them. I just don’t think I was predisposed with all the mommy things. Here are just a few thoughts on why…

I Did Not Enjoy Being Pregnant

I get it. You aren’t supposed to say that, but it’s true. I appreciate that my body carried three full-term healthy pregnancies and I absolutely love the outcome of those pregnancies. However, my husband knew I was pregnant even before I took tests for the second and third because my normally happy disposition was replaced with a moody, snappy one. I didn’t have that glow and my body ached. And the minute I found out I was pregnant, I couldn’t sleep comfortably on my stomach, even with that full body pregnancy pillow I bought.

I Could Not be a Stay-at-Home Mom

Actually, I could if I had a nanny, a housekeeper and an unlimited supply of money. Seriously though, I’m one of those people who need other people to talk to throughout the day. By people, I mean adults. I tried having a work-at-home office job before I had kids and that only lasted a few months before I took another job downtown to be back in an office. I’ve worked ever since I graduated college, throughout all my pregnancies and 10 weeks after each child was born. I enjoyed my maternity leave with each child, but was ready to be back at work at the end.

I’m Not a Soccer Mom

I like extra-curricular activities where I can drop my kids off and pick them up. I didn’t play sports when I was younger, so I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it. Luckily, my husband played soccer and enjoys the practices and games with my son. They even went to an Atlanta United pre-season soccer game and had a blast. I’m so glad because watching professional soccer is also so not my thing.

I Like Happy Hours and Mommy/No Kid Time

Like … a lot. Like probably more than I should. Sorry, not sorry, but I do. I need some kid-free time every now and again for my sanity. I have a lot of younger friends who don’t have kids yet and also strangely enjoy hanging out with an old mom like me. Again, don’t get me wrong, I love my family and spending time with them. I just equally like my alone time.

I’m Not a Baker

Please don’t ask me to bake. I cook lots of different amazing things, I just can’t bake. And what’s with all the bake sales? I totally made some fruity pebbles “rice krispy” treats and called it a day. My kids thought they were a hit though. And that’s what counts.

Regardless of my faults, I’m still a good mom. Actually, a really GREAT mom. We aren’t all perfect, but we all try our best. And that’s what matters.
