Gearing Up for Tax Free Weekend in Columbia

Gearing Up for Tax Free Weekend in Columbia | Columbia SC Moms Blog

Many parents mark their calendars for tax free weekend because it’s the one time of year businesses – small and large alike – offer great sales ALONG with NO sales tax here in SC. And with school right around the corner, it’s a great time to stock up on the supplies you need!

But the list of eligible items goes beyond backpacks, pens, and laptops. It extends to the collage-age crowd for bed linens, bath towels, and much more! For the full list of exempt items, visit the South Carolina Department of Revenue.

What You Need to Know

The tax-free weekend begins 12:01 a.m. Aug. 3 to midnight Aug. 5.

Shopping in store: Our bordering states, NC and GA are no longer offering tax free weekends, so be sure to expect some crowds as they descend on the area to take advantage of some great deals!

Shopping online: There are some ONLINE exceptions, so be sure to check out the FAQ’s:

An item qualifying for the “sales tax holiday” will be exempt if: (a) the eligible item is both delivered to and paid for by the customer during the three days of the “sales tax holiday”; or (b) the eligible item is ordered and paid for by the customer and the order is accepted by the retailer during the “sales tax holiday” for immediate shipment, even if delivery is made after the “sales tax holiday.” An order is accepted by the retailer when it has taken an action to fill the order for immediate shipment. Actions to fill an order include placing an “in date” stamp on a mail order or assigning an order number to a telephone order. An order is for immediate shipment when delayed shipment is not requested by the customer and is for 3 immediate shipment, notwithstanding that the shipment may be delayed because of a backlog of orders or because stock is currently unavailable to, or on back order by, the retailer.

Shop Local

Tax free weekend is a fantastic time to support local businesses and our economy. Education Wonderland is a small business geared towards everything classroom from bulletin board décor to educational games and school supplies. Looking to stock up on your child’s wardrobe? Fancy Pants Children’s Boutique is a fantastic option for unique kids’ clothing and accessories!

Consider Less Crowded Shopping Spots

Don’t just get sucked into the same places that everyone else will be at (HINT: Columbiana Centre, although that’s a great place, too). Check out Five Points Shopping for a bit of eclectic flair. Also, Trenholm Plaza is a great option for a bite out and shopping! And don’t forget about the Village at Sandhill in the Northeast with a ton of offerings and a great outdoor walk-around.

What will you be shopping for on the tax free holiday?
