It's All Fun and Games Until Someone Poops in the Tub - Columbia SC Moms Blog

Picture this, it’s Friday night … a welcome end to a crazy week. Your sweet toddler is in her high chair while you and your husband take turns playing DJ for your family dinner/dance party. This night is off to a fun start filled with lots of family bonding. As bath time approaches, and your toddler has all but polished off an entire block of “jeesh” (also known as “cheese”), the dance party comes to a close.

Mom gets the bath started while dad gets baby ready for the tub. Baby enters tub and the dance party resumes, only to be interrupted by requests every few seconds for said toddler to sit down, because “we don’t stand in the tub.”

Tub toys abound, we have cups, foam sea creatures that stick to the walls, an array of various shapes and flowers that squirt water, and of course a rubber ducky. We’ve bathed our sweet girl, played mermaid long enough to wash her hair and are just sitting in the bathroom together enjoying some family time when it happens…

Our sweet little angel props herself up like Captain Morgan, giggling all the time. We laugh too (silly, naive parents that we are) and then we see it…

Poop. In the tub.

We both scream, and then laugh and then scream again. Mom picks up the toddler. Dad runs to get wipes. Mom passes off the toddler to be rinsed and cleaned again. Dad does the second bath while mom fishes poop out of the tub (we won’t get into the logistics here … I mean, you’ve been there, right?). Dad rocks baby and reads her stories, while mom fills the tub with enough bleach to make a person pass out…

And all the while, our sweet sweet girl giggles and smiles, and is the happiest she’s been all day.

Some might guess that the poop in the tub ruined our night, but the truth is, I think it was the best night we’ve had all week. It was a bonding experience … a gross one … but a bonding experience nonetheless. I’m glad my partner in crime was by my side while I was fishing baby turds out of the bathtub and successfully removing the finish on said tub by scrubbing so hard.

These days of parenting are a myriad of strange, exciting, gross, and fun experiences. And despite the fact that I’m not sure I’ll ever think of that tub as being clean again, the “poop in the tub” experience was actually pretty hilarious.

Maybe our best parenting story yet…

How has your family bonded over an unconventional experience?
