20+ Movies Your Boys Will Love!

0

I am a #boymom all the way. And I love it.

One of my favorite things to do with my boys (and my husband) is to snuggle up together on the couch and watch a movie. Every Friday night at our house is pizza and movie night. It’s a fun tradition we started with our boys that we hope to carry on for a long time.

Our tradition has caused me to search for movies my boys will like. I feel like it’s crazy easy to find movies girls will enjoy. I mean, it seems like three-quarters of Disney movies are all about princesses and such. There are a plethora of movies about fairies, Barbie, ballerinas, romance, sisters, etc. It’s always so easy to find a movie that appeals to girls. But what about boys?

While my boys do enjoy a good “girl movie” from time to time, they enjoy movies with strong male characters more. And who can blame them? Let’s face it, given the choice, a boy would most likely pick a movie that involves car crashes, fighting, “potty” words and farting over a movie about a pretty princess any day.

Unfortunately, really good boy movies can sometimes be in short supply. So, I’ve put together a list of current and classic movies that are perfect for boys. They are also good for a variety of ages; from your two-year-old to your 12-year-old.

My boys enjoy these movies and I bet yours will too!

Movies From the Past Few Years

Captain Underpants

This is the ultimate boy movie! Two boys who are best friends (and major pranksters!) write and illustrate their own comic about a silly superhero who only wears a pair of underwear and a cape. They then get the idea to hypnotize their school principal into thinking he’s that (over-enthusiastic, simple-minded) superhero, Captain Underpants. There is no end to the hilarity in this one, and it is a movie made for boys! Oh, and by the way, the villain in the movie is named Professor Poopypants. Enough said.

James and the Giant Peach

A little boy on an adventure with a bunch of bugs/insects inside a gigantic peach. Need I say more?

Cars

Most little boys love playing with cars. I know my boys have quite the Matchbox collection at our house! If your boy loves cars, and especially race cars, they will love all three of the Cars movies (be sure to also check out the Planes movies, if your son likes airplanes).

The Boss Baby

I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical of this one when I first saw the previews. But, it has quickly turned into a movie my boys love. A seven-year-old and his new baby brother (who wears a suit and isn’t what he seems), team up to stop the evil plot of the CEO of the company their parents work for. This one is great because it shows the realities of sibling rivalry, but also what good relationship brothers can have.

Hotel Transylvania

Two movies (soon to be three!) about all kinds of crazy, silly monsters. What more does a boy need?

The Angry Birds Movie

This movie is just plain fun. A bunch of (male) birds in anger management classes ban together to stop the pigs who have invaded their peaceful island and stolen all their eggs. Throw in a crass eagle, some “potty” words, an exploding bird, and a giant slingshot, and it’s the perfect combination of boy!

The Emoji Movie

This is another movie I was unsure of, at first. How can a movie about Emoji’s be good? But, I was proven wrong. And I’m glad I was! This is actually a very cute movie and has a great message. It promotes the idea that we should be happy with who we are and know we don’t have to be who others want us to be.

Despicable Me

An evil mastermind who, along with his quirky minions, wants to take over the world, suddenly becomes a foster dad and has to navigate his desire to rule the world and balance parenthood at the same time. It’s a hilarious combination, fronted by a strong male lead character. The second and third movies are just as funny, along with the spinoff Minions movie.

The Lego Movie

If your boys are as obsessed with Legos as much as mine are, The Lego Movie is a must! This first movie in the Lego series follows a construction worker in his quest to stop an evil villain from gluing his Lego world together. If your boys like this one, be sure to check out The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie as well.

Seeing our favorite movie series…Star Wars!

Classic Movies

The Princess Bride

I cannot describe this movie any better than William Goldman did himself, “…Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Revenge. Giants. Monsters. Chases. Escapes. True love. Miracles.” And so much more! This has been my favorite since I was a kid and now I get to enjoy seeing how it has quickly turned into one of my boys’ favorite movies as well. It’s “inconceivable” to not like this movie!

Flight of the Navigator

I grew up watching this movie with my cousins and never tired of it. A young boy discovers an alien UFO and travels eight years into the future. He goes on quite the adventure with the interactive UFO, which is occupied by some funny little alien creatures, whom he befriends.

The Karate Kid

A bullied teenage boy who learns the art of Karate from a Karate master. This movie combines two strong male leads, Karate, and lessons in how to deal with bullies. That’s a winner in my book! Be sure to check out both the sequels as well!

The Goonies

A group of best friends (all with very distinct personalities) on a treasure hunt. Enough said.

The Sandlot

Boys, baseball, and a little bit of mischief. You can’t ask for a more perfect combination.

The Neverending Story

I love this movie not just because of the amazing fantasy world that is created, but how it subtly promotes reading. Through reading a mysterious book, Bastian is taken on an exciting journey through a mystical world with some amazing creatures. Perfect for encouraging the imagination!

The Mighty Ducks

A stuck up (male) lawyer is forced to coach a band of misfit hockey players. If your boys like hockey, they’ll love this one! This movie shows how important teamwork is and is just plain fun to watch.

Mac and Me

Another of my favorites growing up. This movie features a wheelchair-bound boy who befriends an alien trying to escape from NASA. I love it for the exciting storyline, and also because it shows everyone is different and that’s OK.

E.T.

I’m thinking y’all are familiar with this one. Ha! The best “boy meets alien” movie out there!

Waiting to see The Lego Ninjago Movie

Current/Classic Movies In One

The Jungle Book

Whether you’re watching the original version from 1967 or the newest one, this movie is one that’s sure to bring a smile to your son’s face. A boy living on his own in the jungle, being raised by jungle animals. Mowgli is living the dream…no parents to “boss him around,” gets as dirty as he likes and doesn’t have to take a bath. It’s every little boy’s dream! Well, minus the man-eating tiger. But, it all works out in the end so it’s OK.

Star Wars

Ultimate boy movies, right here! Star Wars has everything a boy could want; aliens, space battles, bad guys vs. good guys, (lightsaber) sword fights, spaceships, pretty girls (yeah, they notice…), and the ultimate battle of good vs. evil. Whether you start with the originals or watch the latest ones, you can’t go wrong (however, true SW fans like myself will tell you to just watch episodes IV and up and skip I-III. But we can talk about that another time…).

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Oh, man…a poor (literally) young boy who wins a contest and gets the chance to tour a chocolate factory. Isn’t that every kid’s dream? Endless candy and chocolate? I know it’s mine! This is a must-see for both boys and girls, but it has a strong male lead in the form of Charlie Bucket. It also teaches a great lesson about honesty and doing what’s right. This movie also inspires children to believe that their dreams can come true.

What are your favorite movies for boys?
