A Celebration of Reading! Fun Ways to Celebrate Read Across America Day

    0

Today is a bit of a holiday for me. My sorority, which I am still very active in as an alumna, focuses on literacy as its philanthropy. Therefore, Read Across America is a big deal for us. We celebrate with a local school, and the children love it almost as much as we do as we invite them to #readleadachieve.

And this year is extra special as Read Across America marks its 20th birthday! What began as a day to celebrate reading is now the nation’s largest reading event. Officially sponsored by the National Education Association, this day is on Dr. Seuss’s birthday. The NEA has a toolkit on their website to show you how you can celebrate year round.

I’m celebrating today by going to Logan Elementary with my alumnae club friends and several collegians. We read to the kids. Special Dr. Seuss characters come. We have Cat in the Hat themed cookies and juice packs. We always give them a Dr. Seuss pencil, and sometimes we give them books from literacy grants from the Pi Beta Phi foundation or a book drive that we have held as well.

Want to create some fun of your own to celebrate today and everyday? Here are 12 ideas:

    • Volunteer to read to children at a school or after-care group.
    • Start a Little Library.
    • Host a book drive.
    • Donate books you aren’t using to a non-profit organization who could benefit from them.
    • Make green eggs and ham for your family for breakfast. Too late for breakfast? Have breakfast for dinner.
    • Make bookmarks.
    • Have a family movie night and watch The Cat in the Hat.
    • Share a special bedtime story, even if your children are older and have outgrown them.
    • In Lorax style, plant a tree.
    • Talk about your favorite books during dinner.
    • Have your children read to you.
    • Have different colored goldfish for a snack (in honor of One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish).

She volunteers often and tries to make the world a better place.
