When the Snow Never Arrives :: 5 Easy DIY Play Snow Recipes

Living in Columbia, the chances of your kids finding enough snow to play with are low. We were so excited to hear that a “snowstorm” was coming. Then we were quickly disappointed when we could barely see the flakes coming down, or worse yet, nothing at all. It seemed like everywhere else in the state got snow that stuck. So to make up for our lack thereof, we created some easy DIY play snow recipes.

Conditioner Play Snow

Ingredients:

1/4 cup white conditioner
1 1/2 cups of baking soda

Directions:

Using a spatula, mix together the conditioner and baking soda in a bowl. You’ll know you’re done when the baking soda stops flaking off.

Other recipes online may recommend doubling this amount, but I’ve found it to be perfect for a toddler. The great thing about this recipe is that it smells nice and turns everyone’s hands smooth and silky after it’s washed off. It’s easy to clean and you can store it at room temperature in a sealed container. If it seems dry after the second or third use, you can always add another squirt or two of conditioner to make it good as new.

Ice Play Snow

Ingredients:

3-4 cups of ice cubes

Directions:

Blend ice cubes in a blender until they reach snow-like consistency. You may have to use the pulse setting a few times to work out extra chunks.

This is the wettest of the snow options, so I’d recommend letting your kids use it in the tub! My son ended up eating most of this experiment. The biggest bonus was that my blender blades got sharpened.

Shaving Cream Play Snow

Ingredients:

1 can of shaving cream
2 – 16 oz. boxes of cornstarch (you can also use a few cups of baking soda as a substitute)

Directions:

Pour both boxes of cornstarch into a bowl. Work the shaving cream in using small batches until all of the cream is gone. You’ll have to knead the shaving cream in, like you are kneading dough. You’ll know it’s done when the mixture is moldable and doesn’t stick to your hands anymore.

This can be stored in the freezer in a gallon Ziploc bag and used again later!

Soap Play Snow

Ingredients:

Ivory soap

Directions:

Take a bar of Ivory soap and place it in the microwave on a paper plate. Keep an eye on it and stop the microwave as soon as it stops “growing.”

This is a light and fluffy snow that is very moldable. The best part is it’s soap – so getting it on your kids’ clothes isn’t the end of the world.

Snow Clay

Ingredients:

1 cup baking soda
1/2 cup corn starch
3/4 cup cold water

Directions:

Mix dry ingredients in a pot, then add the water. Stir over medium heat until the mixture bubbles and pulls away from the sides of the pot. When it starts looking like the consistency of play dough, remove it from the heat.

After it cools in the pot for a bit, you can remove it and start kneading. Once you get a ball of dough, it’s ready for your kids to play with! The mix can be reused, but store in an airtight container so it doesn’t dry out.
