Sorry, Not Sorry

Sorry, Not Sorry | Columbia SC Moms BlogHave you heard Demi Lovato’s new revenge anthem, Sorry, Not Sorry? It is amazing, and although it has no applicability to my life, I can’t stop listening to it. And I thought I should take a break from screaming this song in my car to write about a few things for which this mama is also not sorry.

Sorry, not sorry, but this is my new normal, and I’m not going to apologize for it.

1. Shopping at Forever 21. Look. I know the actual name of the store gives it an age restriction, but I got a flowy black blouse for work for $14, and I look gorgeous and skinny when I wear it. And as long as I can still navigate that too loud music and the crop tops, I’m not sorry that my 32-year-old self still shops there.

2. Wearing athletic wear ALL WEEKEND LONG. If you run into me over the weekend there is a 100% chance that I’m in workout clothes, and about a 10% chance that I actually am on my way to or from the gym. I dress up all week (in Forever 21 blouses) and I just don’t have the energy to do it when I’m chasing around a toddler. And isn’t that kind of like a workout anyway?!

3. My messy house. And car. I’m not ashamed to admit that I haven’t seen the floorboard of my car in maybe two years. My house is habitable and the laundry is finished, but there is probably a sink full of dirty dishes at least 50% of the time, as well as clean laundry draped across various chairs and tables, perhaps never making it to a hanger in my closet. I work full time outside the house and I have a 2-year-old. I’m tired, and I’m not sorry that my house isn’t spotless. Bless this mess, or whatever.

4. Letting my baby eat sweets and junk food. He loves broccoli, and he’s a little fruit bat. But there are times that we indulge in potato chips and bakery sweets. Our favorite destination when we have the day off together is Silver Spoon Bake Shop. Boy asks for a “little cake” (party four), and I don’t hesitate for a second. We treat ourselves when we can, and I don’t feel bad about it at all.

5. My baby staying up WAY past bedtime. My bonus daughters don’t live in our home all the time, so when those busy teens come over in the evenings, their brother stays up as long as he can to play with them. I do feel a little guilty when we’re dragging early the next morning, but it’s worth it to see all my children together for those nighttime snuggles.

6. My taste in music. I read very sophisticated books, OK, but my musical tastes match a college student at a bar. Can I scream it at the top of my lungs? Bonus points if there is an opportunity for a fist pump. Hip hop from the late 90s/early 2000s, boy bands, and current Top 40 are my jam. And if a Ludacris song comes on, you should be prepared for me to embarrass you. Because I’m an amazing rapper.

7. Enjoying my alone time. Baby went to sleep early tonight and hubby is at the game. So I just ate 10 warm break and bake chocolate chip cookies that I didn’t share with anybody. I’m not watching Paw Patrol, and I’m not going to clean my house. The dryer just dinged, but those clothes are going to sit there until probably next Tuesday. And I am sorry, but I’m not sorry that I get this time all to myself.

You be you. And don’t apologize for it.

What are you sorry, not sorry for?

Sarah Shuster
Sarah grew up in Lancaster, SC but has called Columbia home for nearly 10 years since her undergrad days at Presbyterian College. Columbia holds a special place in her heart, as it’s where she got her first “grown up” job, obtained her Masters of Library and Information Science degree from USC, and met her husband, Todd. She became a mother for the first time three years ago to Todd’s two sweet daughters, and loves watching them grow into unique and interesting young ladies (12 & 14) who inspire her daily. She is also experiencing life with an infant for the first time with their newest family member, a silly, happy 6-month-old baby boy. Sarah is a full time children’s librarian, and loves that her passion and her career have aligned to form dreamy days of sharing her love of literacy and learning with children and families. Sarah enjoys practicing her cake decorating skills, reading, brunch, ridiculously long showers (a luxury now with an infant), working out, good coffee and perfecting the art of crockpot cooking.
