Friday | Aug. 25, 2018


Toddlertime is an interactive program for toddlers and their caregivers that encourages early enjoyment and development of language and literature through stories, rhymes and songs. For more information, call (803) 345-5479. (ages 18 – 35 months)

Teen Gaming Hour

We’ve got a Wii and XBox and you know how to play it. Join us to enjoy your favorite games. Welcome to bring your own game(s).

Tween Extreme: Circuitry

This hands-on workshop will spark a greater understanding of electronic circuits using Lego’s WeDo robotics kit. STEM programs stimulate children’s interest in science, technology, engineering and math. Registration required. For more information, call (803) 345-5479. (grades 4 – 7)

Saturday | Aug. 26, 2018

Kick It Karate

Kick it Karate is a free specialized karate class for all kids and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This SC Developmental Disabilities Council program takes place at Capital Karate in Rosewood every Saturday morning (pending holidays and cancellations due to weather).

Qualified and certified karate instructors take time to help those with special needs develop confidence and basic karate moves. There are three age groups:

  • Ages 3-6 class from 9.15-9.45 a.m.
  • Ages 7-12 class from 10-10:30 a.m.
  • Ages 13+ class from 10.45-11.15 a.m.

Nature Discovery Walk

Join one of our knowledgeable volunteer naturalists for a fun and engaging walk along the park’s Boardwalk. Discover park wildlife and the amazing diversity of plant life that make Congaree National Park unique. Please wear comfortable footwear and bring water and insect repellent.

Soda City Market

Whether you’re shopping for a one-of-kind gift, picking-up this week’s groceries, or spending the morning with family and friends, you’ll find a refreshing mix of local and regional food and craft vendors at Soda City — and if you’re from out of town, visit us on Main Street and see Columbia as the creative class, international, and bustling community we are! Free parking throughout Columbia on the weekends (no matter what you see on signs and stickers) including the Cannon Garage on Taylor Street between Main Street and Sumter Street.

LEAP: Romp & Rhyme Babytime

Literacy, Enrichment and Play (LEAP) is an interactive program for babies and their caregivers that uses books, rhymes, games, fingerplays and songs to encourage literacy through learning. For more information, call 785-2630. (ages birth – 18 months)

Kids Club®

They make; you shop! Kids 3 and up can enjoy a fun project. Sign up online or just drop in. $2 per project, supplies included. Parent or guardian must remain on premises during the event.

Soda City Comic Con

Soda City Comic Con is coming to the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center in Columbia, SC on August 25th and 26th, 2018 and will be a comic and pop culture event to remember! Featuring vendors and artists from South Carolina and beyond this will be a show you won’t want to miss! 

Time: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Main Street Latin Festival

Endorsed by the City of Columbia, the purpose of the Main Street Latin Festival is to showcase the culture and vitality of Columbia’s Latin community. This is done by bringing together diverse groups of people to celebrate and share the Latin culture through its foods, arts, dances and music in a fun, family-oriented environment. Year after year, thousands of people fill Main Street in beautiful downtown Columbia, SC. The streets are filled with the sounds of salsa, merengue, reggaeton and grupero music, folkloric dancers and Latin foods. Admission to the Main Street Latin Festival is FREE! Food, beverage, and merchandise are available for purchase throughout the event to support Columbia’s Latin community.

Paint Me A Story

Join us for Paint Me A Story as we read a selected children’s book, then have fun completing a themed art project based on our story! Ages 6 & up may be “dropped off”. Under 6- parents accompany child please. Theme: “There’s Only One You” and Wood Frame w/Ceramic Fish. $15.

Storytime and Activities Featuring We Don’t Eat Our Classmates

It’s the first day of school for Penelope Rex and she can’t wait to meet her classmates. But it’s hard to make human friends when they’re so delicious. Dino Tales

A vain Prince learns a valuable lesson when he is turned into a hulking Beast for his selfish behavior. It will take a young woman named Beauty to teach him the error of his ways. CMT’s adaptation has  both drama and comedy, and features detailed marionettes and rod puppets.

TeenScene: Porkchop Productions: Beat the Book

Discover the basics of beat-boxing and work with other teens to create your own musical performance based on narratives from popular young adult fiction titles. This one-of-a-kind workshop explores the history of rhythmic music and dialogue in theater, from sprechstimme, patter songs, to today’s popular rap-infused musicals. Family Time!

While there are not any official kid-friendly events happening today, there is still lots you can do together! Check out a new splash pad before the weather turns cool, go to an outdoor playground you haven’t visited before, or take an adventure at one of the local kid-friendly hiking spots in the area!
