Countdown to Kindergarten

Rising kindergarteners and their families are special guests at the 15th annual Countdown to Kindergarten Celebration! The celebration gives rising kindergarteners a chance for children and families to be able to connect with representatives from school districts, community organizations and state agencies and become aware of all the accessible resources in the area. Children will have a chance to practice school skills before the bell rings including:

  • getting on and off a school bus
  • holding lunch trays
  • tasting nutritious snacks
  • visiting a mock classroom 
  • enjoying hands-on learning activities at the museum.

Families can connect with representatives from school districts, state agencies, and community groups to learn about educational, health and community resources. Free admission! Free fun!

Disney’s The Little Mermaid

Based on Hans Christian Andersens beloved story and the classic animated film, “Disney’s The Little Mermaid” is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight- time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Part of Your World.”

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Lost in My Wonderland

The Broadway Bound Vista Theatre Project (BBVTP) is pleased to present the South Carolina premiere of Lost in My Wonderland, a new full-length musical adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, August 2-5 in Cardinal Newman School’s Anna Tronco Williams Performing Arts Center, 2945 Alpine Road.

​However, when Alice makes her way through Wonderland with the BBVTP, it will be quite unlike anything Lewis Carroll envisioned. Lost in My Wonderland finds Alice in 1899, falling through a rabbit hole and magically into the future. She travels through decade after decade, meeting familiar Wonderland characters throughout her journey. Ending in the Swinging ’60s, this musical fantasy takes audiences through the Roaring ’20s, Hollywood of the ’30s, Big Band ’40s, and the Beatnik ’50s with a myriad of dance styles featuring the delightful residents of Wonderland!

Kick It Karate

Kick it Karate is a free specialized karate class for all kids and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This SC Developmental Disabilities Council program takes place at Capital Karate in Rosewood every Saturday morning (pending holidays and cancellations due to weather).

Qualified and certified karate instructors take time to help those with special needs develop confidence and basic karate moves. There are three age groups:

  • Ages 3-6 class from 9.15-9.45 am
  • Ages 7-12 class from 10-10:30 am
  • Ages 13+ class from 10.45-11.15 am

Bookworm Bookends

Celebrate your child’s devotion to reading in our book lover’s hands-on workshop. Together you and your child can build a set of bookworm bookends to add personality, organization and excitement to bookshelves in any playroom, family room or bedroom. Once your bookends construction is complete, you and your child can decorate it with paint and stickers. All Kids Workshop attendees must be accompanied by a parent or adult at all times. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last. Children must be present at the store to participate in the workshop and receive the kit, apron and pin.

Nature Discovery Walk

Join one of our knowledgeable volunteer naturalists for a fun and engaging walk along the park’s Boardwalk. Discover park wildlife and the amazing diversity of plant life that make Congaree National Park unique. Please wear comfortable footwear and bring water and insect repellent.

Live, Love, Latch!/The Global Big Latch On

La Leche League is hosting their annual Live, Love, Latch! event in honor of National Breastfeeding Month, to celebrate breastfeeding families, and demonstrate all the wonderful community support and resources. Anyone interested in breastfeeding and supporting breastfeeding is welcome to attend, whether you’ve breastfed or not. There will be a wide range of vendors that all families in the Midlands will find valuable! There are 100 swag bags that will be handed to the first 100 in the doors! Lots of exciting raffle items- each person gets a ticket, and additional tickets will be for sale. In addition to breaking last year’s attendance records, we are officially registered with the Global Big Latch On, and at 10:30 mothers who wish to participate can Latch and nurse their baby simultaneously with others across the globe!

State Museum to Offer Free General Admission to Children 12 and Under

The South Carolina State Museum is providing *free general admission to children 12 years old and younger starting Saturday, July 28 through Sunday, August 12.

Guests can explore four floors of permanent and changing exhibits like Fill in the Gap, Eclipsing 50: The State Art Collection 1967-2017 and South Carolina and Reconstruction, 1865 – 1876. The Boeing Observatory will also be open (weather permitting) for solar observing. A new full dome planetarium show, National Parks Adventure and the latest 4D movie, ICE AGE: No Time For Nuts will be showing at an additional cost of $5.

*This offer is available for children 12 and under and valid for up to six kids per party with purchase of adult paid admission.

A vain Prince learns a valuable lesson when he is turned into a hulking Beast for his selfish behavior. It will take a young woman named Beauty to teach him the error of his ways. CMT’s adaptation has  both drama and comedy, and features detailed marionettes and rod puppets.

Sensory Sunday

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and sensory processing differences are invited to join us for exclusive Sensory Friendly Days the first Sunday of each month from 9 – 10 a.m., first hour the museum opens! They’ll have the opportunity to explore the museum in a safe and accepting environment, and enjoy interactive, hands-on activities. 
 
This exclusive event will also provide:

  • A comfortable, protected and accepting environment.
  • An opportunity for parents to make connections with other families.
  • Special needs information for parents.

First Day Festival

First Day Festival is a completely free event for parents and students in the City of Columbia and surrounding areas. First Day Festival’s mission, is to reduce the burden on parents for school supplies for their children including all grade levels. It will continue to increase family partnerships academically with interactive vendors and aide in excitement for the upcoming school term. First Day Festival is a meaningful event for the entire family to enjoy. Festival activities include arts and crafts, face painting, free haircuts, free hair care for girls, resources and information from community vendors, free health screenings and vision tests, free kids fingerprinting, and a kids’ zone equipped with bounce houses and more.
