KIDS FREE at the SC State Museum

End of Summer blues got you down? Cheer up and CHILL OUT with a visit to the State Museum. With four floors of permanent and changing exhibits to explore, plus a 55ft digital dome planetarium, 4D Theater and state-of-the-art observatory the State Museum is the perfect destination for family fun in Columbia! Add-on a 4-d theater film, planetarium show and/or blockbuster exhibit admission for $5 each.

Hands on Art for ages 2 – 5

Simple art fun for the very young. Dress for a mess!

City of Reptiles

Teen Movie: Jurrasic World

Countdown to Kindergarten

Rising kindergarteners and their families are special guests at the 13th annual Countdown to Kindergarten Celebration! The celebration gives rising kindergarteners a chance to practice school skills before the bell rings including:

  • getting on and off a school bus
  • holding lunch trays
  • tasting nutritious snacks
  • visiting a mock classroom
  • enjoying hands-on learning activities at the museum.

Families can connect with representatives from school districts, state agencies, and community groups to learn about educational, health and community resources (including the Columbia SC Moms Blog). Free admission! Free fun!

Willy Wonka Jr.

Willy Wonka, owner of a magical and mysterious chocolate factory, invites the audience to join him in a world of “Pure Imagination.” Although Wonka excels at making candy, he is ready to retire and find some “bright spark” to continue his candy confectioning (“Golden Age of Chocolate”). Tickets $6 – $10.

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Skateboard Pencil Box

Join our hands-on workshop and you and your child can build a rolling skateboard pencil case just in time for back to school. Once the pencil box is built, your child can decorate it with The Home Depot sticker. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a FREE certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last. Children must be present at the store to participate in the workshop and receive the kit, apron and pin.

EdLympics 2016

Calling all EdLympians! Show your strength and athletic ability during an exciting day of high jumps, long jumps, archery, squirt gun shooting, javelin noodle throws, and more! Learn about different participating countries during our own EdLympics Opening Ceremonies, and see the EdLympics torch shine brightly in front of EDDIE!

A long time ago, Peter Pan took Wendy on an adventure to Neverland. Travel with them to a galaxy far, far away, as they visit an alien planet, rescue the Princess Nebula and confront the despicable Admiral Claw.

Back to School Movie Night

Crooked Creek Park will host its annual Back to School Movie night featuring the recent Disney hit Zootopia. The movie will begin at dark, 8:45 p.m. and is free to the public. Complimentary movie snacks (popcorn, snow cones, candy, sodas, water) will be available. Brought to you by presenting partner Chapin Baptist Church and other community partners including Chapin United Methodist Church, Palmetto Health and Lake Murray Presbyterian Church.

Sensory Sunday

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and sensory processing differences are invited to join us for exclusive Sensory Friendly Days the first Sunday of each month from 11 a.m. – 12p.m. before the museum opens! They’ll have the opportunity to explore the museum in a safe and accepting environment, and enjoy interactive, hands-on activities.

This exclusive event will also provide:

  • A comfortable, protected and accepting environment.
  • An opportunity for parents to make connections with other families.
  • Special needs information for parents.
