On February 19, Columbia SC Moms Blog joined Columbia Children’s Theatre for a magical opening night family-friendly event of Elephant & Piggie’s “We’re in a Play!” based off the popular Mo Willems books. Families of all ages from Columbia, Lexington and the surrounding areas came together for a special evening of delicious food, exciting entertainment, boutique shopping, giveaways from local favorites and one-of-a-kind preshow activities!
Magical Preshow Entertainment
The Magic of John Tudor, master magician, showcased his amazing talent alongside his trained rabbit! Guests gathered around and marveled at his ability to wow guests. His amazing heartwarming magic has been enjoyed across North America professionally for over two decades, and contains an energetic mix of imaginative stories and state-of-the-art magic.
In addition, there was an ice cream bean bag toss in honor of one of the hilarious storylines from the books. The staff from the Children’s Theatre made it extra fun with their knack for entertaining audiences.
Interactive Arts and Crafts
The folks from My Gym provided an interactive arts and crafts table full of fun activities for kids! Children enjoyed using chalk and crayons to create their own version of elephant. The activity was adapted from their Art Explorers program which focuses a learning concept and theme, then applying it to an art activity to reinforce the concept and encourage creativity.
A huge hit from the evening was MyMo, the official mascot of My Gym! Families lined up on the red carpet to meet him and have their pictures taken to commemorate the night.
Youthful Cotton, a new Lexington based online kids clothing boutique, had racks upon racks of adorable rompers, dresses, jon jon’s and more! They offer a wide spectrum of children’s clothing styles that fit the personality of your child; all while offering impeccable customer service and affordable prices. (And they hand deliver to your doorstep when you need it – even the day of – now THAT’s service!)
Before entering the theatre, guests stopped to poke their heads through the custom Elephant & Piggie cut out and stuck a pose on the red carpet in front of our official backdrop. Andrea Wood Photography, whose work has been in Target stores worldwide, Baby Talk, Motherhood Maternity and more, was our official photographer of the evening. She loves capturing real moments within families, and her talent is evident from the incredible pictures she took from the evening.
Delicious Food and Sweets
Yum. Yum. Yum! PDQ, one of Columbia’s newest and favorite options for fresh, hand-breaded chicken and homemade dressings proved endless trays of their delicious tender varieties, as well as nuggets. And if you haven’t tried their apple slices and toffee dip, let’s just say you’ll be adding a new favorite to your list of must-haves! And did we mention their soft, melt in your mouth cookies?! It was hard to pick a favorite, but I’d have to say the oatmeal cranberry topped the list!
There were also custom cupcakes from TnT Sweets, an amazing local baker whose flavors are out of this world – caramel macchiato, red velvet, chocolate filled with M&M’s (just to name a few of our favorites). By the time the show was over, the only thing left were a few crumbs and guests were raving about how much they enjoyed them!
Once tummies were full, guests grabbed a bag of popcorn found their seats. The best part of the Children’s Theatre is it is completely kid-friendly. In fact, colored mats adorn the front seating area encouraging little ones to sit with one another to enjoy the show up close. As everyone settled in, the costume contest took place. The kids marveled at the opportunity to get on stage and show off, and the crowd cheered for each and every participant.
Finally, after much anticipation, the show started. Known as the premiere theatre for families and young audiences, the Columbia Children’s Theatre proved their reputation once again! The performance was spot on, and the excitement of the crowd could be felt as the interactive show took on its own life with audience participation! Laughter and giggles filled the room, and all eyes were glued to the stage to see what would happen next.
As the show wrapped up, guests could be heard saying….
That was so much fun!
I loved it!
Can we do it again??
Meet the Cast
The good news was, guests didn’t have to leave right away! The cast came out and spent one-on-one time with the kids, signing autographs and taking pictures.
We had so much fun at the event and loved providing the families of Columbia with a fun-filled evening! A special thanks again to all our amazing sponsors!
