Join the Columbia SC Moms Blog at The Columbia Children’s Theatre and experience the highly entertaining and family-friendly productions both parents and kids in the Midlands have been raving about! Known as the premiere theatre for families and young audiences, they are proving this reputation accurate once again with their upcoming performance of Elephant & Piggie: We are in a Play! And the best part is, it’s a show both parents AND kids will enjoy!
But it’s more than your typical show … we’ve gone all out to bring you a magical, preshow event centered around the theme of the show with tons of fun for all ages!
The Super Fun and Entertaining Story of Elephant & Piggie
Get ready for a musical experience ripped from the pages of Mo Willems’ beloved, award-winning, best-selling children’s books that will leave audiences doing the “Flippy Floppy Floory” dance all night long! In Elephant & Piggie‘s “We Are in a Play!,” Gerald and Piggie take to the stage in a rollicking adventure perfect for young audiences. An elephant named Gerald and a pig named Piggie are best, best, “bestus” (a word Gerald and Piggie made up that means “very best”) friends. But Gerald worries that something could go wrong that would end their friendship. Piggie is not worried at all. She’s even happier and more excited than usual. That’s because she and Gerald are invited to a party hosted by the Squirrelles, three singing squirrels who love to have a good time. And so begins a day when anything is possible.

This one-of-a-kind event will bring elements of the play into fun activities beforehand. We don’t want to spoil the fun, but think interactive games, bright colors, kid-approved favorites and geared towards all skill levels (even mom and dad can participate!). And did we mention prizes??

Dress the Part and Win Big {+ Giveaways}!
Come outfitted as YOUR favorite animal (bonus if it’s a character from the books!). We’ll hold our infamous costume contest where prizes will be awarded for best dressed for several different categories during the evening — youth, teen, group — so go all out! The winner will receive… (We can’t give away ALL the details! But trust us, it’s something worth waiting for!) We’ll also be handing out raffle tickets for your chance to win several giveaways from local businesses.

The Magic of John Tudor, master magician, will be on hand performing his amazing talent and wowing guests. His amazing heartwarming magic has been enjoyed across North America professionally for over two decades, and contains an energetic mix of imaginative stories and state-of-the-art magic. If you’re not a magic fan before coming to event, you will be after seeing his incredible work!
Interactive Arts and Crafts – Fun While Learning
The folks from My Gym are dedicated to seeing children exceed in all areas of life. They have developed an Art Explorers program that focuses a learning concept and theme, then applying it to an art activity to reinforce the concept and encourage creativity. They are bringing an interactive arts and crafts table FULL of various fun activities your child can create … all centered around the theme of Elephant & Piggie! We caught a sneak peak of what they have in store, and trust us when we say your kids (and you) are going to love it! In addition, they will be bringing their favorite sidekick, MyMo, the official monkey mascot of My Gym!

Delicious Food and Theatre Inspired Treats
So. Much. Food. PDQ, one of Columbia’s newest and favorite options for fresh, hand-breaded chicken and homemade dressings will be providing endless trays of tenders (including grilled), yummy apple slices with toffee dip … and that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
We’ll also have custom cupcakes from TnT Sweets, a delicious local baker whose flavors are out of this world! They’ll have a spread of their best options and designs for each guest to feast on. And before you find your seat, grab a bag of buttery popcorn to enjoy with the show.
